We started climbing up the big building towards the spotlight thing. No one was near the building at the time so we took it as the time to get up there. I had already decided that we shouldn’t always depend on our wings. That’s why we were climbing instead of flying up there. It’s kinda like if you have a knife. You don’t want to depend on it for everything.

“So what’s the cryptic message gonna look like?” Connor asked.

“This,” I said as we got up on the roof. I showed him big red letters.

“Don’t tell me you-” SkyBird began shaking her head.

“I did. We need it more than they do right now. If we don’t tell anyone than they won’t have time to need the letters, they’ll be too busy screaming their heads off when their race is being killed!” I replied. You see last night I snuck out and went to a theatre in Dover and took the letters they used on a big billboard to say what movies were playing. I know. I’m a resourceful person.

“Now all we have to do is wait for midnight to come,” Connor said as we all sat down and began to chat on our headsets to 43 Things Members. I was having a good talk about appreciating the little things with Ray and Aisha. Connor was joking around with Dante and Anthony. SkyBird was talking about what it’s like to fly and have wings with Sheila and Sum.

As night began to fall I noticed a lot of people gathering near and at the Guilford bridge. There was probably around a hundred people there all together. I saw SkyBird and my school, friends, and even our family was down there. Even our family from Florida traveled to see the message. In a way it felt like a warming.

“Let’s get this show on the road,” I said as we all grabbed letters. Connor turned the spotlight on. As the light shown in the sky everyone gasped. SkyBird and I started to spell out on the light.

Our message all together said, “A war will begin in winter. Be prepared. Evil wants to rise and kill every human. But please be ready. We don’t want you all to die. You are all beautiful people that deserve to live. Humans are beautiful creatures just like our kind.”

“This is so cool!” Connor whispered as the crowd read out the whole message. A lot of people were even writing it down.

“Too bad it’s all going to end,” a voice snickered from behind us. SkyBird and I quickly finished the message then turned around with Connor. Dr. Xander and his men were standing there. How in the freaking world did he and his men get up here?!

A man came barreling at us and grabbed a hold of SkyBird. He had a sharp sword in one hand. My eyes went wide with anger and all rationality went away. I rammed into the man as SkyBird squeezed out of his grip. That’s when everything went wrong. So very wrong. The sword swung down on me. Strands of hair and feathers went flying as the man pushed me off the side of the building.

“Hero!” SkyBird screamed in horror. In a fit of rage Connor started beating up the man holding the sword.

“DIE! DIE! DIE!” Connor screamed at the top of his lungs. Other men tried to stop Connor but he kept punching, kicking, and biting.

I felt empty and everything was slow. My hair had been cut short. To most people that would have been devastating. But that wasn’t the worst of it. My wings were...they were...
