(Y/N) POV:
That day started like any other day would. The sun began to rise over the towering concrete buildings that I'd become accustomed to. The light glistened across the water of a canal with a small bridge going across the man made river. A staircase on one side of the bridge led down to a small ledge that followed along the side of the canal.
Hidden underneath the bridge along the ledge, I lay silently with ragged and torn clothing. Nothing but cardboard boxes to cover my body during the cold nights. The light from the rising sun glared off the water and shimmered across the underside of the bridge, the light dancing on the ceiling from the rippling water.
I tried to roll over and catch some extra sleep, various trash and rubble rustling around as I moved. After a while I realised I wasn't going back to sleep, so I stared at the concrete wall in front of me. The smell of mould and moss filled my nose as I examined some graffiti on the wall. The face of an overly exaggerated man with large lips and bright pink cheeks. He of course had a backwards cap in the artwork as well. I guess some people think that's cool, which it wasn't in my opinion.
I slowly sat up and rubbed my elbows. They were red from leaning on the concrete floor. My neck and back felt stiff like rock, and my head pounded with a splitting headache. But there wasn't any time to worry about the pain that I had gotten so used to, my stomach was a much higher priority.
Scooping out some water from the canal in a small tin that I found in the garbage, I placed a round white tablet that sizzled and eventually dissolved in the water, making it drinkable. This tablet was some sort of water purifier I had bought from a camping and outdoor survival store. Buying it with the last bit of money I had scrounged up from begging in the city.
I slowly sipped the water, letting it glide past my tongue and quench my dry throat that felt like a desert. I raised the tin above my head and shook it to get the rest of the water, savouring every last drop. I rummaged through an old and worn duffle bag that I carried with me, checking to see if all my possessions were there. An old and slightly chipped toothbrush, an almost empty tube of toothpaste, spare clothes that smelt of sweat and dirt, and something I held dear to me. Something I had ever since the day I murdered my parents.
An old brown teddy bear, one I had been given when I was a child. Sewing lines were clearly prevalent along its body, making me guess that it was homemade. Over the years it had become more rugged and dirty, some pieces missing or chipped away.
As I stared at the bear (which I either never named or didn't remember its name) my mind began to replay the day again and again. Like a VHS rewinding itself and replaying over and over, sometimes buffering, leaving me with a fuzzy image in my mind. The details I could never make out, but I wouldn't need them to remember the big picture.
I took a deep, sharp breath, trying to re-centre myself. I rubbed the leather strap of my duffle bag, and shifted my bare feet on the dirty concrete floor, trying to re-root myself in reality. I find that feeling and touching things helped with that.
Without any more delays, my day began. I first started by walking further into the city. I searched for a place to set up and try and get some money, but the best places had been taken by a handful of other homeless people. They looked at me with a cold, animalistic stare. They had gotten to the best spots first, so they'd guard it like a lion protecting its den.
So on I went, strolling further through the dense, busy city. The smell of food and paint mixed with the fumes of a car filled my nose, mixing inside my stomach and giving me a strange feeling. Hunger slowly ate away at my body. But without any money, the only hope I had of finding food was from begging, or from someone with a kind enough heart.
