Just quickly mentioning this chapter and all future chapters of this fic will be in third person instead of first. I know it makes more sense for an xreader fic to be first person, but as my writing style has improved and evolved I feel more comfortable writing in third person. Hope the change isn't too jarring!

With that being said, I hope you enjoy the chapter!

There was a biting chill in the air, dark grey clouds looming over the towering glass structure where many a renowned hero has been trained. There was a scent of moist air, UA's courtyard having just been sprinkled with a light mist of rain, leaving the dirt cold and damp. Most would be sensible enough to stay inside away from the beginnings of winter. But, for some, not even mother nature stops them from working, training.

Mud sloshed onto (Y/N)'s new pair of navy sneakers provided to him by the school. Most of his clothes he had before UA found him were provided to him from various homeless shelters, never fitting quite right, making it the schools responsibility to provide him with new clothes. (Y/N) took his stance, feet spread apart and arm stretched out in front of him. He aimed his hand at a soccer ball a few metres away from him. His eyes focused on the black and white patterned ball, analysing its surface with smears of wet dirt. A click went off in his mind, his quirk easing into a passive ignition. It had worked, his training had worked, he was learning to control his power.

"I've got it," he told Mr Aizawa who was standing to the side, watching with a keen eye. Principal Nezu stood next to Mr Aizawa, arms held behind his back and face flat with focus.

"Now, try to move it," Aizawa requested.

(Y/N)'s fingers twitched, power surged through his veins he had to channel carefully. (Y/N) already knew the effects of his quirk when it goes wild, and even with Mr Aizawa present, he was nervous to purposefully use his quirk. For so many years I've tried to suppress my quirk, it's strange to release it purposefully.

The soccer ball began to twitch, almost mimicking the movements of his fingers. Cautiously, (Y/N) raised his arm, his other hand curled around his forearm with a tight grip. The white and black checkered ball lifted from the ground, hovering in place. (Y/N) tried to lift his arm more, but he hesitated, feeling his confidence wobble like someone on a tightrope. His fingers twitched. He tried to stabilize himself, shifting his feet further into the mud. But he was losing his grip. He could feel his quirk overflowing with power. Power that scared him into submission, allowing the surge of energy inside him to control his thinking.

"Steady," Mr Aizawa tried to reassure. But, it was too late. (Y/N) needed to cut the connection before things got worse. He clenched his hands into a tight fist. The floating soccer ball burst, a loud bang exploding from the pressurized air. (Y/N)'s hands relaxed, tilting down slightly as he took a sharp breath.

Aizawa grunted, concerned at the sudden downward spiral he witnessed. "You good, (Y/N)?"

(Y/N) exhaled, mist of cold breath coming out of his mouth. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm good." He sounded a little out of breath, all that nervous energy using his quirk tiring him out. Despite failing to use his quirk as he attended, he wasn't as hopeless as he expected. After all, he wouldn't even dare think of activating his quirk a few months ago. He was taking the next steps to mastering his abilities, no matter how small they were.

"It seems you still have a ways to go with your quirk," Principal Nezu said, "But it's a start. Quirk mastery doesn't happen overnight."

"Agreed. You're able to turn your quick on and off with relative ease. But, you can't control the amount of power you release."

"What do you mean?" (Y/N) asked, walking over to the benches not far from the training grounds to grab a drink of water.

"Think of it like a water tap," Aizawa explained, "You can turn on and off the flow of water. But, it all comes rushing out at once. You haven't learned to use the handle to limit or increase the flow of water. It's all or nothing, you could say."
