“You know, when you said I’d be working outside today, this is not what I had in mind,”I promised.

“Well, you are in fact outside and getting quite a workout in,”She shrugged.

“I didn't think that would mean carrying a bunch of cookies to several houses.”

“You didn't ask.”

“Why would I ask that?”

“To see if you would be carrying a bunch of cookies to several houses.”

“Oh, of course I was supposed to think about that. Silly me.”

“Yes. Silly you,”She shrugged, walking up to Thomas’s door. Shoving every container of cookies besides the one with Thomas’s name written in duck tame, she knocked on the wood.

We stood there for a moment, me struggling to hold the sweets and her standing there. There were voices talking over inside each other before the sound of people running on hardwood was heard all the way outside. Someone shouted something that sounded like a muffled, “I win,” before opening the door, revealing Teresa, her dark hair hanging in front of her eyes. Blowing a strand out of her face, she stood there for a moment. Her overalls seemed to go past her feet so I don't know how she won.

Thomas appeared behind her, rolling his eyes and crossing his arms as he pretended not to care.

“We brought cookies,”Y/N grinned, reaching for the box on top before handing it to them. Thomas’s tune changed instantly as he opened the box and shoved a cookie in his mouth.

“Thanks for your much appreciated service,”Teresa smiled, putting her hand in her pocket. Pulling out two nickels, she handed them to Y/N, who said a thanks.

“So, are we on tonight?”She suddenly whispered.

“You know it. As long as you have it,”Y/N whispered back.

“Always.”

“Just so you know, the cookies will be gone in an hour,”Thomas spoke through a mouthful of sweets.

“Mine better not be.”

“We’ll have to see you in an hour.”

“You two have fun with this,”Y/N said simply, shutting the door.

“Uh, what's tonight?”I questioned.

“That a tonight question.”

Of course. I should have expected that.

“So where to next?”I asked, not letting myself dwell on it right now (or trying) and tuning out the playful fighting from inside.

“Sonya and Harriet,”She answered, reaching into my front pocket for a moment. I gave her a confused expression at the seemingly useless action.

“I had to give you your penny,”She shrugged.

“Why do we get pennies?”

“It's just a bit at this point.”

“Strange bit.”

“A fun one though,”She shrugged, taking two of the boxes before starting to walk again. Following right along her, we took the dirt path to the diner.

I was starting to feel the burn. I’m not out of shape, but I’m definitely no athlete.

There's just one more stop after this, and it’s right by my aunt's. Somehow, someway, I will survive.

“Where are my favorite workers?”She asked the leader at the front.
