“He’s had plenty of treats already.”

“It's just some bacon,”I defended.

“Aris, you're going to make him fat.”

“No I’m not. Besides, he’s so happy about it,”I shrugged, patting his head as he devoured the breakfast meat.

“Well, of course he’s happy about it. He’s getting more treats.”

“He’s a good boy.”

“Yeah. And if you keep this up, he’s going to be an obese one.”

“Bit early for y’all to be going at it, ain't it?”my aunt remarked, looking up from her plate at us.

“He’s fattening Brutus,”She tattled.

“I just gave him bacon.”

“Well, don't give him bacon.”

“Aun Susan, can I give him bacon?”

“He’s allowed one piece. Y/N’s just usually the one to feed it to him when she's here.”

I shot her a look that she paid no mind to as she gave me a shrug. Wow. Some people just have no shame. Like her. She’s been that way for as long as she's been alive.

“Hey, are the coolers still in the garage?”She asked before shoveling more eggs into her mouth.

“Yes ma’am.”

“Alright. Well, we should probably head out. Start packing.”

“Yeah. Probably. You gonna help her, Aris?”

“Yes ma'am,”I nodded, taking the final bite of my toast before going to follow her who was already outside. As I did, I felt a vibration in my pocket, making me freeze.

Only one person ever calls me. My few friends back there prefer hanging out in person, and my friends here have no reason to when they’ll see me at least once a week.

They’ll want me to pick up. They’ll go on about how much they miss me and ask how I’m doing.

They don't have to know that I know. They don't have to know that I didn't answer on purpose. They don't have to know that I’ll avoid picking up as long as I can.

You know what? Screw it. They wanted me to actually talk to people and for me to come back better. And I won't. I’m still going to go back to the suburbs awkward and uncomfortable around crowds.

I’ll be happy though. The people that I actually care about, that I love in a way that doesn't hurt, will be just a voluntary letter and phone call away. Something I can never, ever find there. Why should I pick up if I know this won't have the result they want so badly? Why would I ruin the great day I’m about to have for at best a mediocre and emotionless conversation?

“You coming?!”

“Yeah! I’m coming!”I called, opening the door but being careful not to let the dog I was fattening up out.

“Is ice really good for long?”

“Yes, Aris.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I drag these coolers around all the time.”

“Yeah, I know, but how do you know it's good when you hand it off? Maybe they have to let it freeze for an hour or something.”

“My ice works,”She said firmly.

“You mean my aunt's ice,”I corrected.

“I’m going to take that cooler from your hands and beat you with it,”She threatened.
