"Hey, are you coming for breakfast anytime soon?"
"Mm,"I grumbled, throwing the blanket over my head.
"Aris, come on. It's pancakes."
"Shortstacks?"
I was immediately whacked with a pillow through the sheets, making me groan. It didn't hurt that bad, seeing as it's cotton and fabric, but it felt appropriate. Plus, she's got a hell of a swing. She's made that plenty known.
"Alright, remember you made me do this,"she said firmly. I weighed out my options from what she could be doing. I can't sleep through getting beat with a pillow, but I wouldn't have to see sunlight. I really don't mind when she pins me down, so if anything that's more of a reward.
When I was met with silence, I reluctantly uncovered myself, rubbing my eyes as I stretched. Turns out, it is not easy to get sleep when you're worried about how you're going to cut off your parents. Who could have predicted that?
"Fine, I-"
I stopped mid-sentence when I was left with an empty room. Was I hallucinating the entire thing? Because there's no way she could just soundlessly slip out that perfectly. No human could.
When I sighed, going to get out of bed, my mouth dropped open at the sight of my hoodie deliberately on the nightstand. I didn't think shortstack was terrible enough to deserve this. Some people would probably even think it's cute. Instead, she takes my hoodie off to taunt me?
I just woke up, and my entire day's already ruined.
"That was uncalled for!"I promised, balling it up in my arms as I left. She was leaning against the hallway wall, her arms crossed as she wore a satisfied smirk.
"It got you to leave, didn't it?"she shrugged, taking it back before I could blink, tying it around her waist. I could only shake my head at how she knew my every mood before I did, always one step ahead of the Chess game I got thrown into when I decided to have just one friend.
"You're always using it as a weapon against me. And it was mine! You used my five year hoodie as a weapon."
"It's still yours."
"You don't act like it."
"You complain when I wear it. You complain when I don't. How am I supposed to win here?"
"Certainly not by taking it off to get me up."
She gave another innocent shrug before grabbing my hand. I followed both her and the smell of syrup and sizzling bacon that I already know Brutus is drooling for. Her hands were strangely cold this morning, a warning of what was to come.
"Well, look who's awake?"
"Morning,"I nodded, sliding into my seat.
"There ain't a lot of batter left. You're gonna want to pop something else in,"she warned, putting a plate in front of me. The single pancake wasn't much, but the chocolate chips immediately made up for it. Well, that and the love obviously put into it.
While I was distracted, she threw a piece under the table. Immediately, the large dog who doesn't know his own size scrambled over, his tongue out in excitement. He eagerly sat in front of it, scarfing down the breakfast meat.
"How dare you."
"Should have been faster,"she shrugged.
"I was doing my best."
"Your best wasn't enough."
"You two really are somethin',"she sighed, shaking her head as she joined us at the table. I could only nod in agreement before cutting my breakfast, watching each bite take way too much off of my plate. I was already mourning washing my dish in the sink. This really is the end of another beautiful chapter. Even when it actually happened, I was still in shock at the cruel loss.
