By the time we were done, so was the day, the orange glow of the sunset making its usual appearance. I had sunsets back in the suburbs obviously but not like this. Not like home.

“You did good, cowboy,”She complimented, lightly nudging my shoulder.

“I know. I think I did better than you,”I teased, nudging her back.

“I wouldn't go that far,”She denied.

“I would.”

“You’re getting way ahead of yourself,”She insisted.

“And a head taller than you.”

She shot me a glare, urging me to shut up. Seeing as I love her and all, I listened, choosing to make a show of looking down at her instead.

“You’re so annoying about this,”She huffed.

“I can't help that you're all the way down here,”I drew out, placing my hand right by her hat. “Oh, actually, this adds a few inches, way down here-”
“You get on my nerves,”She interrupted.

“Or maybe a little shorter to be safe-”
“You're the worst,”She cut me off.

“Ouch. Shoot me in the heart, why don't ya’?”

“Your feelings are fine,”She waved me off.

“I don't appreciate your dismissal.”

“You’ll get over it,”She dismissed yet again, walking ahead of me.

“Are you still that sore about a height difference?”

“I’m supposed to be the tall one. I've always been the tall one.”

“Not anymore,”I said simply, easily taking her hat from her. When she gave me an even sharper glare than before, eyes narrowed and lips firmly pressed together, I shrugged as I tried it on.

“I hate you so much right now.”

“Like you said, I’ll get over it.”

Turning around with a groan, she walked up the steps, her boots making her louder on the white wood.

“Pretty sure the shoes add some height too.”

Opening the screen door and having the audacity to ignore my wonderful observation, she carefully opened the actual one and squeezed, pushing Brutus away from it so he couldn't run out. Following suit, I firmly shut the first one behind me as she pulled him away, holding on to his red collar that proudly displayed his name. He didn't wear it often. Only when he was keeping my aunt company for the day. He knows where he’s supposed to be, and he’s easy to watch through the screen door.

“Hey,”I smiled as I patted his head. My aunt gave one back, though I couldn't help but notice it was more with her eyes than anything, still kind but sort of tired. Placing Y/N’s hat back on her head, I leaned against the counter, watching her tie her hair up.

“I need a break.”

She said it in a lighthearted way, but she was still red from the day despite her damp clothes making it clear she just showered. Even two extra hands only went so far with miles of land and dozens of animals. She definitely deserves one. Something, anything.

“I can make dinner tonight,”I offered.

“Don't worry about it, honey. I’ve got it.”

“I know, but I can do it. I’m not Y/N or anything, but I’m not incompetent,”I assured her.

“You’re sure?”She asked in a firm voice.

“I’m sure.”

“Alrighty then,”She smiled, ruffling my hair as she walked past, admittedly making me sigh. I don't know why I even brush it at this point. My girlfriend won't stop running her hands through it, my aunt won't stop messing it up, and it just looks flat when I sweat.
