“I want ya'll inside today. There's been warnings. Talk of power outages,”she sighed, shaking her head before looking out the window, brows furrowed with dread.

“Then, there really shouldn't be just one person out working. It will only make everything slower,”I pointed out.

“I've been doing just fine for years. I promise I'll survive another week,”she said firmly, giving me a sharp look.

“I'm eighteen now. I have been for months. Shouldn't I be able to decide?”

“Key word at the end there. Teen. Your life's barely started, which means ya' get to listen to your elders,”she smiled, ruffling my hair as she walked past me. I let myself huff, my arms crossed over my chest as she opened the door, Brutus already following by her side.

“You're not gonna win with her. I've been trying for years now,”Y/N informed me, looking up from the cereal box she was reading. I grumbled under my breath before eating the Lucky Charms with next to no charms. Seriously. This whole morning has been an injustice.

“So,”she started, wiping her mouth with her hand. “What are we supposed to do all day?”

“I dunno. Paint maybe?”I shrugged.

“No, I've worked myself into an art slump. If I see another pencil, I'm going to throw up,”she admitted, leaning her head on the table.

“We could bake something?”

“No ingredients. And I don't wanna go to the store.”

“I don't know, short stack. I think there's stuff for pancakes.”

She sat up to give me an offended glare, narrowing her eyes as she scooted her chair out. With her nose in the air, she walked past me, letting out a small huff.

“Come on. You had ten years being taller than me! And you never let me forget it!”I reminded her, following her to the bedroom.

“I did not. I was a perfect angel,”she insisted, collapsing on the bed.

“Really? Cause I think Ms.Roberts-”
“Ms.Roberts was a dried up wench who should have retired fifty years earlier,”she defended.

“You were an absolute menace sometimes! You can't tell me you forgot that!”

“Can't hear you! I'm busy!”she said loudly, pulling her ears.

“Y/N-”
“La, la, la, la, la! Can't hear you!”she insisted, walking to the dresser. I watched her pull her makeup box out as she made herself comfortable on the floor, leaning against the wall.

She really is beautiful. She looked so simple, a plain yellow t-shirt and white shorts meant for nothing more than safety from the heat. Her hair was completely off her neck and out of her face, both tied up and held back with a black headband that wrapped completely around her head.

“What? There's not always time to be pretty,”she waved me off. I blinked at her, the words taking a second to fully set in. I've heard a lot of lies in my life, seen a lot of nonsense, but none that really made me freeze up like an idiot.

“But you're always pretty? You know that already.”

“Well, I'm not this week. My face is blotchy and weird. And I'm starving like a peasant Victorian child every thirty minutes, so that's great.”

“I mean, I'm sure there's chocolate hidden somewhere in the house,”I said as delicately as possible, keeping my face neutral. Still, she immediately looked at me with suspicion, like she was deciding whether or not I was mocking her.
