The next morning, the Jeon family gathered in the dining room for breakfast. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm toast filled the air, but the usual pleasant atmosphere was overshadowed by the serious expression on Mrs. Jeon’s face. She cleared her throat, immediately catching everyone's attention.
“I spoke with Mrs. Yoon this morning,” she began, placing her cup of coffee down carefully. “We’ve decided it’s time to fix the wedding date.”
The statement hit like a bombshell, and the room fell silent. Jungkook, who had been scrolling through his phone absentmindedly, froze. He slowly looked up, his face a mixture of disbelief and shock. “Wait...what?” he stammered. “You already decided on a date?”
Mrs. Jeon smiled warmly, as though she had just delivered the best news. “Not yet, but Mrs. Yoon and I agreed we shouldn’t delay things any further. We’ll finalize the date by tomorrow.”
Jungkook blinked, his fork suspended in mid-air. “Why the rush? There’s no need to hurry. I haven’t even... I mean, we haven’t even had time to—”
“This is absurd,” Mr. Jeon interrupted, his deep voice cutting through the room. He placed his cup on the table, his expression stern. “First, you pushed for this engagement without proper consideration. Now you’re rushing the wedding as if the world is ending tomorrow. What’s the hurry?”
Mrs. Jeon turned to her husband, her smile faltering slightly. “I just think it’s better to get everything done while there’s no reason to delay. Jungkook already agreed, and Mrs. Yoon is on board. There’s no issue.”
“No issue?” Mr. Jeon raised an eyebrow, his voice firm with disapproval. “This is ridiculous. Marriage is not something you rush into, especially not when it seems like no one but the mothers are enthusiastic about it.”
Mrs. Jeon, who had been calmly listening, suddenly bit back, her tone sharp. “Oh, really? Now you have a problem with this? Weren’t you the one who hurried everything when Jungkook was engaged to your friend’s son? You didn’t even ask for my opinion back then, and now you’re acting all righteous? You’re being a hypocrite, if I may say so.”
The tension in the room thickened. Mr. Jeon frowned, his jaw tightening. “That situation was different,” he said firmly.
“Different? How exactly was it different?” Mrs. Jeon retorted, her voice rising. “You pushed that engagement because it suited your business plans. Don’t pretend it was about what was best for Jungkook. At least now, I’m doing this for his happiness.”
Jungkook, who had been sitting silently, suddenly slammed his hand on the table, startling everyone. “Enough!” he shouted, his voice filled with frustration. “I’m so sick of being treated like a pawn in your plans! I’m not some chess piece for you two to argue over. This is my life, and I’m the one who has to live with these decisions, not either of you.”
Mrs. Jeon looked taken aback, while Mr. Jeon leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. “Jungkook,” his mother began softly, but he held up a hand to stop her.
“No, Mom. I’ve had enough of this,” Jungkook said, his tone calmer but still firm. “You both need to understand that I’m not ready for this marriage. I agreed to the engagement in the heat of the moment, but rushing into a wedding is not something I’m okay with.”
“But Jungkook—” Mrs. Jeon tried again, her voice laced with concern, but he interrupted her.
“No,” he repeated firmly. “No more discussions about this, at least not now. Let me figure out what I actually want before you decide my future for me.”
