It was nearly midnight, and the weight of worry had only grown heavier, settling like a storm cloud within the walls of the house. The once lively gathering was now eerily silent, save for the faint ticking of the clock on the wall, each tick a cruel reminder of the passing time. Mrs Kim sat motionless on the couch, her tears dried, but her face hollow with exhaustion and fear. Mr Kim had stopped pacing but stood near the window, staring out into the darkness as if willing his son to appear.
Jungkook sat in a corner, his usual air of confidence replaced by a suffocating guilt that gnawed at him with every second. He kept his face blank, but inside, panic clawed at his chest. His mother, seated beside the Mrs Kim, glanced at him now and then, her eyes narrowing with suspicion that she couldn't yet confirm.
The house felt stifling, the tension swirling so thickly it was almost tangible. Yeonjun sat quietly in a corner, clutching his phone, refreshing his messages over and over in vain. The only sound was the occasional rustle of movement or the heavy sigh of despair. Midnight loomed like a spectre, and still, there was no word, no sign, no clue of Taehyung's whereabouts. Each passing second deepened the sense of dread, and the unspoken question hung heavily in the air: Where is he?
Mr Kim, his patience long worn thin, finally snapped. He turned sharply towards Jungkook, his expression hardened, his voice low but firm, carrying an edge of undeniable authority. "Enough of this," he said, his tone cutting through the suffocating tension in the room. "You were the last person with him. Now tell us-what really happened? Where is my son?"
Jungkook flinched slightly but quickly masked his reaction, his guilt bubbling dangerously close to the surface. "I've told you everything I know," he replied, his voice uneven. "He just-he decided to go his own way, that's all. He'll be here any minute."
But Mr Kim wasn't buying it. He stepped closer, his gaze narrowing. "You're lying," he said bluntly, his words like a sharp blade. "There's more to this than you're telling us. I can see it all over your face."
Before Jungkook could stammer out another excuse, his own father, who had been silently observing from the side, stood up and joined the confrontation. His presence was commanding, and his voice carried the weight of authority. "Enough dodging," he said firmly, his eyes boring into his son's. "You've been acting strangely all evening, and now you're out of excuses. If you know something, you'll speak up now, or there will be consequences."
Jungkook looked between the two men, both unyielding in their stance. His hands clenched into fists at his sides as he struggled to maintain his composure. The walls were closing in on him, and the pressure was unbearable. Everyone's eyes were on him now, waiting for the truth he was too afraid to admit. The lies he had spun so carelessly were unravelling, and there was no way out.
Jungkook stood there, rooted to the spot, his lips pressed tightly together, his head hung low. The weight of everyone's stares bore down on him, and he felt his carefully constructed facade crumbling. Inside, his mind raced, torn between confessing the truth and holding onto the lies that had barely kept him afloat all evening.
His trance was broken by the Mrs Kim's trembling voice. "Please," she whispered, her tone raw with desperation. "If you know something, anything, just tell me. I need to know where my son is."
Jungkook hesitated, his chest tightening as he finally looked into her tear-filled eyes. The pain there was unbearable, cutting through the guilt he had been trying to suppress. It broke him. His defences shattered completely, and with a deep, shaky breath, he began to speak.
"I-I'm sorry," he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper. "I left him. I left him on the side of the road. I thought-thought he'd find his own way..." His voice cracked, and he couldn't bring himself to finish the sentence.
