The next morning, Taehyung sat cross-legged on his bed, mindlessly scrolling through his phone. The screen lit up with unread messages and missed calls-most of them from the office, some from Jimin, and a few from an unknown number that he had a feeling belonged to Jungkook. Yet, he didn't open a single one. He let them pile up and ignored them just like he was ignoring the turmoil in his own heart.
For the fourth day in a row, he had chosen to skip work, and deep down, he knew exactly why. The logical side of him wanted to believe it was nothing-that the kiss was a spur-of-the-moment reaction, a way to put Jeonghan in his place. But if it truly meant nothing, then why did the thought of facing Jungkook make his heart race with unease?
He tossed his phone aside with a frustrated sigh, rubbing his face with both hands. "Why am I acting like this?" he muttered to himself. "I don't care. I really don't."
But if that were true, then why did he keep replaying the kiss in his mind? Why did he keep remembering the way Jungkook held him, the way their lips moved in sync, the way his body had betrayed him by leaning into the warmth of the man he claimed to despise?
A loud knock on the door startled him out of his thoughts. "Hyung, are you seriously skipping work again today?" Yeonjun's voice rang from the other side. "You know, at this point, you might as well quit instead of running away like a coward."
Taehyung scowled. "Mind your own business!" he snapped, not bothering to move from his spot.
Yeonjun scoffed. "Fine. Keep sulking in there. But just so you know, avoiding him won't make whatever you're feeling go away."
Taehyung clenched his jaw as he heard Yeonjun's footsteps retreat down the hallway. His younger brother's words hit a nerve, one he wasn't ready to acknowledge.
Because the truth was, he wasn't just avoiding Jungkook.
He was avoiding himself, too.
As Taehyung sat alone in his room, lost in his own conflicted thoughts, the sudden ringing of his phone pulled him back to reality. He lazily reached for the device lying beside him on the bed and glanced at the screen. His brows furrowed when he saw the caller ID-Sana.
"Why is she calling me?" he wondered, a hint of confusion flashing across his face. It wasn't unusual for his colleagues to contact him, but given that he had been avoiding the office, he found it odd for her to reach out now. Nonetheless, he swiped to answer the call and brought the phone to his ear.
Before he could even greet her, Sana's panicked voice rushed through the speaker.
"Tae, remember I gave you a report last week to recheck? Where is it? I was looking for it at your desk, but it's not there. Do you have it with you?" she asked, her words coming out in a flustered manner.
Taehyung blinked, quickly trying to recall which report she was referring to. His eyes scanned the room until they landed on his study table. There, placed neatly on the wooden surface, was a familiar black file.
"Yeah, it's with me," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "I brought it home to check, but I forgot to return it. Sorry about that." His voice carried an apologetic tone.
Sana let out a heavy sigh, still sounding anxious. "Tae, please, you need to bring it to the office as soon as possible! Mr. Jeon asked me for the file, and he's already in a really bad mood these days. I can't afford to have his anger directed at me!"
Taehyung tensed slightly at the mention of Jungkook. His grip on the phone tightened, and he pursed his lips. He had been avoiding the office precisely to escape facing Jungkook, and now, because of this one file, he was being dragged right back into the lion's den.
