Chapter 28
I hesitated. I wasn't expecting that. Come to think of it, it was the question I had asked myself since I had become a Latios. The only difference was that before I had asked myself why it had to be me. Now, I had to figure out why it was me.
Arceus noticed my hesitation. "Feel free to take your time,"
I nodded my thanks and my mind went back to the question. I tried to think of anything that would possibly make me earn my powers. However, I couldn't come up with any reason. After all, turning into a Latios had been an accident in the first place. I sighed, giving up. "I don't know. I know I am here for a reason, but I can't figure out why,"
Arceus gave me an amused glance. "That would be because there is all the reason in the world for you to be a Latios, out of all the people who could have found that feather, you did," He smiled. "And yet, there is no reason it would be you. It is because there is no reason that you know there must be one,"
I blinked, confused.
"I'm afraid I can't explain further," said Arceus, "but know that you will understand the answer in time," He cleared his throat. "Anyway, for your reward Michael I will unlock the power in you that has been held back for so long. You weren't ready for it before, but now you are more than ready."
Arceus' eyes glowed again and I felt a sudden force surround my body. Then, out of nowhere, something inside me burst out, like air out of a balloon, and I began to glow a faint green. A tingling sensation spread through me as a wave of power shot through me. Eventually, Arceus' eyes stopped glowing and the tingling stopped though I could still feel all the new power.
"Use your new powers wisely Michael," said Arceus, "I know you've seen for yourself how out of control they can get,"
"I will," I replied, "thanks Arceus,"
"Very well," Arceus turned to face all of us. "I must go now. Thank you for all your help," He was about to teleport when he turned to me again. "Oh, one more thing Michael. I'm sure you heard Cyrus say that the red chain contains the power of the original one. That is true, it contains a portion of my power but it can only bring out a Pokemon's full potential, not give it powers it doesn't have. Anything Cyrus forced you to do with the red chain you can do yourself now," Arceus teleported away with a flash of light.
For a moment, we did nothing, startled by Arceus' sudden disappearance.
"Hey Michael," Pikachu said, breaking the silence. "Does that mean you can open a portal?"
"I can try," I said, still trying to process my new power. I was pretty sure I could open a portal, but that didn't mean I knew how. After several failed attempts I managed to make a small yellow and green portal, though it closed after only a second.
"Don't worry about doing that now, I can wait for a little before I go home," David chuckled. "Besides, I want to look around a bit,"
"We can give you a tour!" said Latias.
"Just don't let Ash lead the way," Latios chuckled.
"What? Is he as bad as Michael?" David laughed.
"I don't know," Latias giggled. "but we could do a test to find out,"
"I bet Michael will get lost first," said David.
"Na, I bet Ash will get lost first," countered Pikachu.
"Hey!" Ash and I yelled at the same time.
~~~
"So, you both got so lost no one could tell who won the bet?" My dad laughed.
"That was the map's fault!" I protested. "They should put something that says if it's upside-down,"
"Or sideways," Ash added.
Latios glanced out the window. "Ash, we should probably get going now if we want to make it back to the Pokemon Center before it gets dark,"
"Yeah, good point," Ash got up from the couch. "It was nice to get to talk to you guys,"
"Same here," my dad shook Ash's hand. "feel free to come visit any time,"
"Don't forget to visit me," said David, "Just let me know before you do,"
"Why?" asked Ash.
"Well it may be a bit awkward to have you appear out of nowhere in front of my friends," David chuckled.
Ash sweatdropped. "Good point,"
I waved to my family. "Goodbye, I'll miss you!"
"Bye honey, enjoy yourself!"
"I'll miss you too son,"
"See you later bro!"
After one final look back, I turned and flew through my portal back to the Pokemon world.
We returned to the Pokemon Center just in time to get a room for the night.
"Whew, that was close," said Ash as we walked to our room.
"Good thing you have supersonic Pokemon for transportation then," giggled Latias.
"What would I do without you guys?" Ash grinned.
"Or us without you," Pikachu nuzzled Ash's cheek. "don't forget, no matter how much we may tease you, you're still the best trainer we could ever ask for,"
"I second that," I flew into the room as Ash opened the door.
"And I third that," Latias flopped down on one of the beds.
"Make that four," Latios turned visible as he closed the door behind us.
"Thanks, that means a lot to me," Ash sighed. "I just wish more people would see Pokemon like I do. We should all just work together as a team and a family,"
"You changed my way of seeing things," I hovered near Ash. "I may not have been evil, but I wasn't that good either,"
"You changed our lives too," Latios smiled.
"Yeah, you let us have an adventure!" Latias did a happy flip in the air.
"And don't forget how much we've grown," Pikachu jumped on Ash's shoulder.
"You're right," Ash let out a small chuckle. "I guess we'll just have to take it one step at a time,"
As we all leaned in for a hug, I felt calm and happiness wash over me. It felt similar, but different from when I had done this with my family. But it was different in good ways. I couldn't quite place the feeling, but to me, it didn't matter that much anymore. What mattered was that I had friends and family I could count on.
