The Uber smelled like a mix of stale carton air freshener and whatever snacks the last passenger ate...

Or maybe it was even the driver that ate it.

Dawn and I were seated at the back of the car, Dawn scrolling through Pinterest for outfit inspo and me staring outside the window to at the busy city. It was a few minutes last six and the streets seemed more alive than ever.

That's Lagos for you.

It was Ola's eighteenth birthday party tonight and we were on our way to Gigi Esho's house. That might confuse you a bit, but don't let it.

The party was happening at Ola's later by 9:00pm and it was one of those events in high school where the entire class was invited. No shocker there— Ola wasn't the type to make his events exclusive.

Heck, I bet he invited friends from other schools too.

Abi?

I mean, asides the fact that he was popular like that— you can't be a rich kid in Lagos and not know people, or people not know you— Ola was that friendly and easy going.

Besides, this was likely the last time we'd be doing something together as a set before Exams start. JAMB was a couple of weeks away and we have been studying hard for it— well, some more than others anyway.

Ola's party was the perfect opportunity to unwind and have fun a little.

And to my utmost shock, even my parents endorsed it.

Gigi had invited us to get ready at her place beforehand. It made sense— easier for the boys to pick us up together so that we would arrive at the party together.

Dawn and I have never been to her house before which was rather surprising now that I think about it. I mean, she's Kizito's girlfriend. But then, I guess we've never had a reason to be invited over, especially since pre-party rituals were always at Semeeha's. Her place has always been the designated pre-party headquarters, the go-to-spot for hair, make up and last minute outfit changes because she had everything.

But Semeeha wasn't in town.

No, she was in Abuja, most definitely preparing to step into what would probably be the biggest night of her entire career... and life.
