The meeting room was dimly lit, a tense silence settling over the team as they processed the information they had just uncovered. The name Kim Yeon Joo echoed in Aera's mind like a haunting whisper from the past. Her mother. The woman who had abandoned her. And now, a potential murderer.
Aera sat stiffly, her fingers gripping the edge of the table. Jimin sat beside her, his expression unreadable, while Leo leaned back in his chair, deep in thought.
"We need to find out more about her," Felix finally spoke.
J-Hope nodded. "She's been a ghost for years, but if she was involved in anything shady, there must be a trace of her somewhere."
Min Ju, who had been unusually quiet, suddenly spoke up. "There's... something else. The last time I saw her, she was visiting my father. She always acted secretive, never saying much. But I remember one thing—she had a key. A very old key. She used to carry it on a chain around her neck."
Aera's breath hitched. A key? Could it be...?
"The house," she murmured.
Jimin turned to her. "What?"
"The house where I used to live... where you and I were neighbors." Her voice was steady, but inside, her heart pounded. "I always felt something was off about it. My father died in an accident, my mother vanished, and after she left... dead bodies were found in the basement."
A cold shiver ran down her spine.
"That house might have answers."
Leo crossed his arms. "It was sealed off by the police, right? So how do we get in?"
Aera looked up, determination blazing in her eyes.
"We break in."
The drive to Busan was long and quiet. Jimin sat in the passenger seat, staring out at the passing lights of the city, lost in thought. Aera drove, her hands gripping the wheel tighter than necessary. Leo sat in the back, going through files on his tablet.
As they neared their old neighborhood, memories started flooding back—some warm, some bitter, some downright terrifying.
The house stood at the end of the street, dark and lifeless, like something pulled out of a horror film.
Aera parked a few blocks away, making sure not to draw any attention.
Felix's voice crackled through their earpieces. "The area is quiet. No police, no patrols. You have time, but don't get caught."
J-Hope's voice followed. "If things go south, we're five minutes away for backup."
Aera nodded, glancing at Jimin and Leo. "Let's move."
They crept through the shadows, sticking close to the alleyways until they reached the rusted metal gate surrounding the house. The "SEIZED BY POLICE" sign was barely hanging on the front door.
Jimin tested the handle. "Locked."
Leo smirked. "Not for long."
He pulled a small lock-picking set from his pocket and got to work. Within seconds, there was a quiet click, and the door creaked open.
Aera took a deep breath.
They stepped inside.
The house was frozen in time. Dust coated every surface, and the air was thick with the smell of decay. The once-familiar living room was now a graveyard of broken furniture and shattered glass.
Jimin's flashlight flickered as he swept the beam across the walls.
"This place..." he murmured. "It feels..."
"Like death," Aera finished.
They moved carefully, their footsteps muffled by the dust-covered floor. Aera led them past the ruined furniture, toward the back of the house where the kitchen was.
"The basement entrance should be here," she whispered, running her hands along the old wallpaper.
Leo's eyes scanned the area. "Found it."
He pointed to a faint outline in the wall. Aera felt her stomach tighten.
It's still here.
She reached out and pushed.
At first, nothing happened. But then, with a low creak, a hidden door slid open, revealing a dark, cold staircase leading downward.
Jimin shuddered. "This feels like a horror movie."
Aera took a step forward. "Let's go."
They descended the stairs carefully. The deeper they went, the colder it got. The smell of old blood and rot still lingered.
Finally, they reached the bottom.
The basement was empty—no bodies, no bloodstains, nothing.
Aera exhaled shakily. "They cleared it."
Jimin walked forward, his flashlight scanning the walls. "Then what are we looking for?"
Aera turned to him. "A sign. Something my mother left behind."
She stepped forward, running her fingers over the cold stone walls. There had to be something.
Then—she froze.
A faint engraving.
She brushed off the dust, and the words became clearer:
"Find the key, find the truth."
Leo whistled. "Dramatic."
Jimin frowned. "What key?"
Aera's mind raced. The key Min Ju mentioned. The one my mother always carried.
Her fists clenched.
"She must have hidden it somewhere."
Jimin looked around, then spotted a faintly outlined locker tucked against the farthest wall.
"Over here."
Aera and Leo rushed over. The locker was old, rusted, and locked tight.
Leo tried to pry it open, but it didn't budge. "We'll need tools."
Aera shook her head. "We don't have time to mess around. Take it with us."
Leo sighed but nodded. Jimin grabbed one side, Leo took the other, and they carried the heavy locker back up the stairs.
They loaded the locker into the car and sped off into the night, leaving behind the haunted house filled with too many memories.
As they drove, Aera's thoughts swirled.
Her mother had left this behind for a reason.
Inside that locker—could be the answers to everything.
Jimin reached over, gently squeezing her hand.
"No matter what's inside, we'll face it together."
Aera looked at him, a small, determined smile forming.
This was just the beginning.
