Classification: Book Two Lost Chapter

Explanation: A few months after the events of Age of Ultron, Steve and Y/N find out they are expecting. This takes place a couple weeks into the pregnancy. Y/N has an appointment at the OB to check on everything, and Steve promised he'd be there. It was really important to her because of everything that had happened in the past year of their lives. So, when Steve doesn't show up Y/N doesn't know whether to be mad or scared.

I sat at the bar with the ultra-sound on the granite in front of me. My knee bounced up and down so rapidly that it caused the chair to shake a bit. I stared out the window as the pinkly orange sunset turned to deep navy blue. After a while, I glanced at the clock sitting on the counter across the kitchen.

9:00 PM

My jaw clenched at the number. Steve promised he'd be home before nine in the morning. Heck, I even expected him to be a bit late so I scheduled the appointment for twelve. But nothing. No call. Not even a text apologizing. Half of me was irritated at him and the other half of me was sick thinking about all the ways the mission might have gone sideways. How he might have gotten hurt or worse. Was he even going to come home?

I glanced at the clock which now read 9:30 PM.

My leg stopped bouncing, and I clenched my jaw tighter as the porch steps creaked under the weight of someone's feet. His feet. At least he was safe.

When I heard the screen door squeal, I turned in its direction. The locks turned with a key, and Steve stepped through the doorway.

"Hey sweety," He dropped his bag and took a step forward with a grin. He stopped short and thought better of it when he saw my expression. "What are you doing up? I expected you'd be in bed by now," his brows furrowed with worry.

I let out a short laugh before standing.

"Well," I took a deep breath in trying to compose myself, "I expected you home... about twelve hours ago."

His eyes went wide, realizing he'd messed up.

"Oh (y/n)," Steve rushed forward going in for a hug. I took a step back and shot out my hands. "I'm so sorry. The mission... It went sideways and took a little longer to wrap up than I expected."

"They always do, don't they?" I shook my head.

"Do what?"

"Go sideways, or take longer than expected?"

"(Y/n)," his jaw muscles flexed, "it was important. We had the right intel. We had to stop these guys now or there might not have been another chance!" Right then he crossed the line from Steve to the Captain.

"Important," I could not help it now. Tears flooded my vision as pregnancy hormones rushed through me. "Steve, this appointment was important!" My left hand began to ache and I started to massage it furiously with my right. It was my tell.

"(Y/n)-" his voice softened but his expression was rock hard.

"It was important to me! And it should have been important to you!" Rivers streamed down my cheeks as my voice started to crack.

"Whoa! That is not fair," Steve's volume raised, "I had to stop these guys, they... they sell illegal weaponry... they were going to kill people, (Y/N)!"

I jumped. He'd never gotten this mad about something. Then again neither have I. A knot of guilt formed in my stomach. He was right in a sense. But so was I.

"I waited," only a whisper would come out, "I made the doctors wait. And I didn't want to reschedule because this was an important appointment." I paused to wipe my face with the back of my hand. "I-I just don't want this pregnancy to end like the last one," my lip began to quiver and I just about broke right there.
