Classification: Book Two Lost Chapter variant

Explanation: This part is very similar to the last one, with a few major differences. For one Steve's departure isn't as cordial. Secondly, before Ross comes and searches the house, Tony arrives to help the situation, making Y/N mad. When ever you see this () I am referring to Y/N because at the time it was quicker to type and I was too lazy to clean it up. Out of the two, this part or the one in the previous chapter, this one is my favorite.

Steve's POV -

I bolted out of the Quinjet and ran across the yard, not having time to feel bad for trampling y/n's flowers. My hand hovered over the vintage door knob y/n picked out, fingers trembling with adrenalin.

These past few days did not go how I wanted them to, and this is not how I wanted to spend the first couple weeks of Ellie's life. Choosing to do the right thing over spending time with my family wears on me. Now, I've dug myself into a hole, and there's no way out. Y/n has been a trooper, especially after Ellie's traumatic birth, but she's not whole anymore. She's been through so much over the years, we both have, and it's starting to show. She's more anxious and tired. The light in her eyes doesn't shine as bright. And now I'm bringing her news that will change us forever.

Opening the door to the house, I see Y/n down the hall as she gingerly shuts the door to Ellie's room. Not having noticed me yet she tip toes down the hall in my direction. She tries to navigate around the notoriously noisy floorboards and I wonder if she's just put the baby down for a nap.

When she finally notices me a look of relief washes over her face. She's tired. I can tell by the dark circles plaguing that beautiful face. In a perfect world it would be sunny all the time. Her lips spread into a delicate, tight lipped smile. And I hate myself because I'm about to shatter it.

Overcome with dread, I can't help but frown back at her. ()'s face drops. Shattered. Neither of us break the silence for a long moment. I'm guess holding on to the last moment of us, me and her, before I break the news. A moment later I decide that we don't have time for this and finally open my mouth.

"Y/n," I whisper so as not to wake the baby. She steps towards me hesitantly. "I need you to listen to me carefully because I don't have much time."

She looks up at me, eyebrows furrowed deeply. "Okay, I'm listening."

"Secretary Ross and his men are on their way here now." I pause and watch every emotion known to man wash over y/n's face. "He's coming to arrest me... and we-"

"How long?"

Right now she is absolutely no nonsense. "A little less than thirty minutes."

A wave of emotion washes over ()'s face. Dread. Fear. Sadness. Fury. Indignation. Suddenly, she turned away from me and began to pace around the kitchen.

"()-" I try to explain further when she waves a hand at me again and pushes her white knuckled fist against her lips, I shut up. I need to tell her that I have to leave. She's in shock. We can't spare the seconds but I owe them to her.

Finally she slows her meticulous pacing and turns back to me. I try to dissect her unreadable expression but come up short. "There's something else?" She begins to wring her hands together. "Isn't there?"

"Yes," I stall and run a hand through my hair. "I have to leave. Go off grid. Disappear. It's the best option that we have on the table."

Her eyes go wide and any remaining color left drains from her face. "Wh-what do you mean? Why? Why is that our only option?"

I didn't have an acceptable answer to that question. I just knew that there wasn't another one.

"() if I stay here, ross will arrest me. He might even try to arrest you for aiding a fugitive." My eyes bounce around her face. The thought of being taken away too makes her flinch. "And if I could take you and Ellie with me then I would, but that's just not feasible." I step closer and take her hands in mine. "There's no other way."
