It was a cool November morning, but more importantly, it was marathon day. I was a mess of nervous and excited emotions and was up and ready before my alarm had begun to buzz on my bedside table. I adorned my favorite running attire and my grey under armor shoes were fitted to my feet ready to start the day. Once I was sure I had everything I grabbed my water bottle and headed to Steve's apartment, which I had never been to before.
I punched his address into my phone and followed the simple directions. His apartment building looked surprisingly similar to mine but in a slightly quieter part of town. I buzzed in and found my way up to his door. I knocked gently wondering if he was awake. He was quick to unlatch the deadbolt and open the door.
"Good morning," though he was dressed and ready I could hear tiredness still hiding in his soft greeting.
"Good morning handsome," I piped with unmatchable energy as he blushed moving to the side letting me in. "So this is where the captain hangs his shield," I looked around the quaint tidy room before me.
"Yeah, when I'm not at the tower," he let out a short breath with a smile pulling at his lips.
"You ready to run a marathon?" I turned to meet his blue eyes that were already set on me.
"Totally," He smirked grabbing his wallet and water bottle leading me out of his apartment. "Motorcycle or car?" He asked when we stepped out of the lobby. I thought about it for a second before making up my mind.
"I'm gonna stick with the car today," I decided and unlocked my car making it chirp in compliance.
Once we both got settled in the car I turned on some hype music before heading to our destination. Halfway there I realized that Steve had assumed a stiff position and clutched to the handle on the ceiling of the car.
"What, am I such a bad driver even Captain America feels unsafe," I turned to him for a second with raised eyebrows then my eyes were set back on the road. He chuckled nervously as I hit the breaks a little too hard at a stoplight, "Sorry." We both laughed at the jolt.
Finally, I parked the car and we headed over to the registration table to pick up our running bibs. To my surprise on our way to the start line we stumbled into Tony and Natasha.
"Hey, guys! I didn't know you were coming," I greeted them both with a hug.
"Yeah we thought we would come cheer on our favorite runners, right Tony," Nat nudged Tony who had dark circles under his eyes.
"Right," Tony shook his head, "Actually no she dragged me here." I wouldn't put it past the Black Widow.
"Well, I'm glad you came even if it was against your will," I laughed pulled him into a short hug.
After that, we headed to the line and found a good spot. While we were waiting Steve and I stretched and tried to get some of our nervous jitters out.
"We're gonna do great," Steve swung his arm around my shoulder and placed a soft kiss on my head. Soon it was time to get in our places.
"Runners on your marks... *BANG*," with that the marathon started. In the beginning, I almost lost Steve in the crowd of anxious runners ready to get off the start line but I managed to find him quickly.
Six and a half miles in and I was feeling good, and Steve can go forever so he was fine too. As we came upon our seventh mile I saw Nat and Tony on the sidelines.
"Wooo you got this, guys! You're doing great!" Natasha shouted getting a little carried away. Steve couldn't help but let out a short laugh at the image of her jumping up and down screaming our names next to Tony who gave an embarrassed facepalm.
"Number one fan right there," Steve puffed as we passed them.
When we hit thirteen miles I could feel the burn than even more so at twenty miles. 'What am I doing! What sane person does this?' I questioned as my muscles grew sore and my lungs objected to every breath taken.
"You good?" Steve looked over at me concerned. I shot him an exhausted look with a sluggish thumbs up, envying his superhuman ability. He offered me a sympathetic smile, "Just hang in there were almost done." He was right only six more miles, that should be easy, but not when we've already run forever.
We were probably only four hundred meters away from the finish line when steve looked over at me and smirked.
"You wanna race? If I win you buy dinner tonight," he teased playfully looking over to me.
"Sure," I nodded and whispered out not able to do much more. He counted down from three on his hand, three, two, one!
Steve didn't have to worry he was definitely the winner. But man I sprinted, my lungs and legs must have just gone numb from the pain because for those four hundred meters I felt like I could run forever. Steve had finished so in far in front of me, he had enough of a breather that he caught me when I crossed the line.
I had somewhat caught my breath when Steve turned my chin up to meet his icy blue eyes. He stared at me for a second, in all my breathless sweaty greatness, then unexpectedly pressed his lips against mine. I was taken aback but didn't object to the sweet passionate kiss that I was gifted. He only pulled away because a familiar billionaire's voice interrupted the moment.
"Gosh Cap let (y/n) breath, she just ran a marathon!" Tony shouted trying to make his way to us as Nat giggled uncontrollably.
"Though it might not look like it he ran those twenty-six miles too Tony," I chuckled breathlessly realizing Steve looked unfazed by the excruciatingly long distance we had just encountered.
"Well how about we buy these two love birds lunch to celebrate their accomplishments," Nat offered as we all headed away from the finish line. I was still half gasping for air and taking in what had just taken place. I blushed at the thought, 'Steve Rogers just kissed me.'
A/n: Honestly didn't know how to put this idea into words so I hope it's not too stiff or cringy.
