Steve's POV-
I bolted out of the Quinjet and ran across the yard, not having time to feel bad for trampling y/n's flowers. My hand hovered over the vintage door knob y/n picked out, fingers trembling with adrenalin.
These past few days did not go how I wanted them to, and this is not how I wanted to spend the first couple weeks of Ellie's life. Choosing to do the right thing over spending time with my family wears on me. Now, I've dug myself into a hole, and there's no way out. Y/n has been a trooper, especially after Ellie's traumatic birth, but she's not whole anymore. She's been through so much over the years, we both have, and it's starting to show. She's more anxious and tired. The light in her eyes doesn't shine as bright. And now I'm bringing her news that will change us forever.
Finally, I open the door and step into our house. I see Y/n down the hall as she gingerly shuts the door to Ellie's room. She's just put the baby down for a nap.
A look of joy and relief floods her face when she sees me. Then she reads me like a book, her face falling as she realizes I am not here to bring good news.
"Y/n," I whisper so as not to wake the baby. She steps towards me hesitantly. "I need you to listen to me carefully because I don't have much time."
"I'm listening," She says, looking up at me, eyebrows furrowed deeply.
"Secretary Ross and his men are on their way here now." I pause and watch every emotion known to man wash over y/n's face. "He's coming-"
"How far out is he? How long do we have?" She interrupts me.
"A little less than an hour."
She looks as if she might vomit at the time frame.
"Y/n, they are coming for me because I violated the Sokovia accords. I have to leave, or they'll arrest me. Clint made a deal with them to avoid serving jail time, but I doubt Ross will let me get off that easy because I was the leader."
Y/n nods slowly, though she'll no longer look me in the eye.
"Okay," is all she says.
"Ross will probably have surveillance on you, the house, and the property at all times to ensure they'll see me if I come back." I take a deep breath and wish she would give me more than just an okay to tell me she understands.
"I have to leave. I can't contact you, and I don't want you to try to contact me because if Ross found out you were in contact with me, he might accuse you of being an accessory to my defiance. I can't have you punished for my actions, too."
"Okay," y/n barely whispers and nods in understanding.
I gently grab her chin and pull it up to see her eyes. Even then, she refuses to make eye contact, looking everywhere into my eyes.
"Y/n," I cradle her face, "look at me, please."
When she finally looks at me, she is a different person. The eyes looking back into mine are cold with silent rage. She doesn't use that look often, only when I have really screwed up. My heart breaks to see that look in her eye now.
"Y/n, I'm sorry-"
"Don't start with that," she waves her hand for me to stop. I told you to go and help your friend. We made that decision together. I'm not mad at you, so don't apologize."
