chapter 38: reno wants to start a fight, but he won't (yet)
~reno~
I'm sick of Kyle. Very sick of him, and I'm not even on the surfing team. I just watch their practices from a distance, but it's enough for me to be itching to fight him. I won't out of respect for Weisz. I can't make any future promises. If Kyle ever crosses a line, I'll be the first one to throw hands.
The team is currently doing burpees on the sand and I've got to admit, I'm glad I'm not part of any sports team. I'm not out of shape or anything, but I definitely won't be able to keep up with them.
Weisz looks like he's about to pass out again. Freida catches it and says, "Take a break, Weisz." I can tell he doesn't want to, but he still stops, sitting on the ground to try to catch his breath. And like all the other times he's given a break, the rest of the team looks annoyed. Kyle seemingly mumbles something under his breath. He's close enough to Weisz that Weisz hears him and looks upset at the comment, but he doesn't say anything.
And it upsets me a lot. I know Weisz doesn't want to say anything back and I know it's decision, but it hurts to see him people make unfair assumptions about him. He made the team because he's good at surfing. He deserves to be on the team, not ostracized because his health is different from his teammates.
Weisz joins back in on the workout. Kyle says something to Weisz, upsetting my boyfriend even more. Weisz shakes it off and ignores him, but he still looks affected. I know Weisz doesn't want me talking to Kyle, but nothing is going to change if Weisz continues to let Kyle walk all over him.
As soon as practice comes to an end for the day, Weisz is the first to walk off. He walks towards the house, walking right by me. I grab his wrist. "Hey, are you okay?" I ask.
"I'm fine," Weisz says, though he takes his wrist out of my grasp and walks into the house. He's normally a bubbly person, so whatever Kyle said must have affected him a lot.
As Kyle walks past me to go inside, I say, "Asshole." Not everything that's on my mind, but enough to get the message across.
Kyle stops and looks at me. "What did you say?"
"What?" I ask. "I didn't say anything. Must have been the wind or something."
"You called me an asshole."
"Nope, I didn't."
"You did."
"Then why did you ask what I said?"
"So you admit to calling me an asshole?"
"Did I?"
"Whatever. I don't have time to deal with you." Kyle starts to head into the house. I should just let him walk away and end the conversation, but I am still so fed up with him. He's treating Weisz horribly for no reason and I've had enough of these kinds of jerks.
"But you do have to time to be an asshole."
Kyle must not like being called an asshole because he walks right back to me and points a finger at me. "I am not an asshole."
"So you're constantly vilifying Weisz just for fun?"
"He doesn't deserve to be on this team. Everyone else works their ass off, but he just gets some handout. He gets breaks when we have to keep pushing."
"Weisz does work hard. Every day. You literally saw him push himself to the point of passing out and you still think he's not working hard?"
"Clearly he's not if he passes out just by running laps on the beach. Or by doing burpees. Or literally any other exercise. I'm surprised he hasn't passed out while surfing."
"He has only passed out once. Why are you so obsessed with Weisz, anyway? I get being athletic rivals, but you're on a whole different level."
Kyle glares at me. "I am not obsessed with him."
"Really? Could have fooled me. You take every single chance you have to try to tear Weisz down. So if you're not obsessed, then you're probably jealous of him." And who wouldn't be jealous of Weisz? He's hot, talented, hot, athletic, sweet, hot. Did I mention hot? Because he's very hot.
"I'm not jealous of him either."
"The more you deny my claims, the more I start to think they're true. Look, I'm not asking you to try to get along with Weisz or become BFFs with him. But can you at least leave him alone? He wants your team to win comps as much as you do."
"Ah, right, wouldn't want to upset the charity case."
This time, it's my turn to glare at Kyle. "Weisz is not a charity case. He made the team through his own hard work. Freida didn't know about Weisz's medical history until after he made the team."
Kyle snorts. "Sure."
"Wow, you really are an asshole. You just believe what you want no matter what people tell you. Freida herself can tell you the truth and you'll still believe that Weisz is a charity case. If you're going to keep thinking that, at least leave him alone and keep it to yourself." I walk past Kyle, roughly nudging his shoulder. I really shouldn't, but I couldn't help it.
I walk inside the house and into the room Weisz and I are staying in. He's lying on the bed, just staring up at the ceiling. He doesn't even look at me as I walk in and lie down beside him. This weekend training was supposed to help the team bond, but it's clearly not working.
"What did Kyle say to you?" I ask. "I saw him say something twice while you were training."
Weisz sighs. "When Freida told me to take a break, Kyle said 'Yeah, go ahead and take your special break, Charity Case'. Then after I took my break, Kyle said 'Might as well just give up already'."
"I'm sorry, Weisz," I say. "Both for Kyle saying that and because I tried talking to him. It didn't go as planned."
"Of course it didn't," Weisz says. At least he doesn't seem mad that I tried talking to Kyle. "I'm just going to have to learn to either tune our Kyle or not let anything he says upset me."
"You shouldn't have to. He should just leave you alone. I really think you should talk to Freida about it now that Kyle knows you had cancer and is using it against you."
"No. Absolutely not. I'm not snitching on him."
"Snitching isn't a bad thing when it's impacting you."
Weisz is silent for a few moments. "I'll be fine. Really. Once this weekend training is over, I'll only have to deal with my teammates during training and practice, not all day. I'll be fine. Just... Try not to talk to Kyle about it again. I know you were trying to help, but he's stubborn."
"Okay, if that's what you want."
"...Yeah, it's what I want."
I don't believe him.
