chapter 18: reno is glad he has friends now

~reno~

I really hope that Kyle guy doesn't practice surfing every weekend because I really want Weisz to be able to practice surfing without that asshole constantly cutting him off or just being a jerk in general.

Weisz's friends are quite acquainted with Kyle since the four of them would also watch Weisz's competitions, so Amelia says she'll deal with Kyle if he acts like an asshole again. I'm not sure what he idea of dealing with him is, but I'll just make sure I turn a blind eye if it turns out to be morally questionable.

Weisz and I get to the beach and head over to wear his friends had set up their stuff already. I set up the picnic blanket Weisz and I brought before sitting down on it. I look at Weisz. "You gonna go surfing now?"

Weisz is already looking out at the ocean. "Yeah. I don't see Kyle right now so I'm going to go enjoy the little time I have before he shows up."

"If he does show up and is an asshole, let me know," Amelia says. "I'd be happy to deal with him."

"Yeah, I don't know if I should be scared or if I should be scared for Kyle," Weisz says.

       "Probably both," Marcel says.

Weisz grabs his surfboard and heads off towards the ocean. I really hope he's able to enjoy himself this time. It took him so long to decide to get back into surfing again. The last thing I want is for him to feel discouraged because of an asshole not knowing to mind his own business.

We're sitting close enough to the water that I have a clear view of Weisz without having to worried about the tide coming up to us. Kyle really must not be here because I'm able to watch Weisz ride a wave for the first time. He ends up falling off close to the end of the wave, but he looks genuinely happy that he was able to ride it for a bit. After all, he hasn't surfed since before he was diagnosed with cancer. He is going to be a bit rusty, but it looks like he doesn't mind.

"Thank you for talking Weisz into getting back into surfing," Jane says to me. "It makes him really happy and we all didn't want to see him completely give it up, even though his reasons for wanting to give it up is valid. It's just... It was hard seeing him lose something he loved about so much."

"He looks really happy to be surfing again," I say, still keeping my eye on Weisz. "And I've never really watched anyone surf so I can't base my opinion off of anything, but he looks really good at it."

"Oh, he is," Jane says. "He was one of the best for his age category whenever he competed. He and Kyle were constantly neck and neck. I wonder if he's going to get back into competing as well."

"I'm not sure," I say. "I know he wants to at least ease back into surfing, so he's probably not in any rush to compete again."

       "That's fair."

I continue to watch Weisz surf and thankfully, Kyle doesn't show up. At least he hasn't shown up yet. I really hope it stays that way for the rest of the day, or at least until Weisz is done surfing for the day.

"Well, would you look at who it is?" a familiar voice suddenly says. I look over and sure enough, I see who I would consider my mortal enemies; Neil and Jessica. I haven't seen them since I transferred schools, even if we still live in the same town. But now, I had to misfortune of running into them at the beach outside of the town.

I don't have the energy to talk to them, so I just look away and back at Weisz having the time of his life.

Neil and Jessica don't seem to understand that I don't want to talk to them because Neil then says, "I'm surprised to see you here with other people. I didn't know you were capable of having friends."

Even though Amelia doesn't exactly know who these two are, she stands up for me anyway and says, "I'm sure Reno is a better friend than you judgmental fucks."

Neil scoffs. "Reno? A better friend? You do realize that he's a drug dealer, right?"

It's not surprise that Neil is still holding onto the lie he has created, but thankfully, my friends know me well enough to not believe Neil.

Not only that, but they decide to play into Neil's lies since they know that Neil is probably trying to get them to isolate me or something. "Uh, we obviously know that," Adam says. "Though I wouldn't really call it drug dealing since it is just weed and it's legalized here."

Jessica scoffs. "And you're still friends with him?"

"No," Marcel says sarcastically. "We're not friends with him even though we're sitting with him. Geez, I hope you two don't party or drink or have sex if you're acting like dealing weed is bad."

Jane sighs, not agreeing with Adam and Marcel's idea to make me seem like a weed dealer. "Would you two stop that? Reno doesn't deal weed." She looks at Neil and Jessica. "I don't know who you two are, but you're disturbing us when we came to the beach to relax so it would help if you two just leave us alone. Thanks."

They don't, of course. "I'm surprised Weisz isn't with you," Neil says. "You two were constantly glued to each other's side. Did you two finally break up?"

As if Weisz had sensed that Neil and Jessica were here causing trouble, he suddenly walks over, holding his surfboard under his arm. "Can't you two ever just mind your business and leave Reno alone?" he asks.

Jessica looks at Weisz, immediately lightening up, so I guess she still has a crush on him despite Weisz never showing any interest towards her. "Weisz. I haven't seen you in so long."

"Yeah, and whose fault it that?" Weisz asks. "I'll give you a hint. Yours and Neil's."

       Jessica furrows his eyebrows. "How?"

"How?" Weisz repeats. "Do you two not remember causing me and Reno to be subjected to homophobic behaviour by getting us banned from the school dance?"

"Wait," Amelia says, recognizing the story since Weisz has told them one of the reasons he and I transferred schools. "There two are the ones that got you banned from the school dance?"

       "He's overreacting," Neil says.

"He most certainly is not, you piece of shit," Amelia says. "Mind your own business and leave queer couples alone."

Somehow, Amelia's attitude towards Neil and Jessica is enough to get them to finally walk away.

Weisz props his surfboard up on the sand before he sits down beside me. "You okay?" he asks. "I know how much seeing them bothers you."

I give Weisz a smile. "I'm okay. It helped that I'm not alone this time and have friends who stands up for me."

"Or feeds into the lies by making them believe Reno deals weed," Jane says, glaring at Adam and Marcel.

"Do you hear something?" Adam asks.

"Nope, nothing at all," Marcel says.

"You look like you were having fun surfing," I say to Weisz.

Weisz smiles back at me. "I was. It felt great to actually be able to surf this time."

       "I'm glad," I say.
