chapter 40: reno knows how to convince weisz
~reno~
On the third and final morning of the surfing team's training camp, I wake up to find Weisz missing from the bed. It's about seven in the morning, not ideal for me to be awake, but the training camp has been waking up early the past couple days. Since I'm only here as support for Weisz, I don't have to wake up with him, but I still choose to anywhere. Mainly because if someone decides to start shit with Weisz, I can defend him.
Weisz and I went to bed shortly after he talked to Freida yesterday about Kyle, so we don't know how Freida's conversation with Kyle went. Honestly, I'm not expecting much, and I'm sure Weisz isn't either. No matter how many times Weisz told Kyle that he made the team prior to Freida finding out he's in remission, Kyle just won't listen. Hearing it from Freida likely won't change anything.
And it sucks. It really sucks. It seems like Kyle is leading the hate train for Weisz so as long as he keeps lying about Weisz, the whole team is probably going to keep ignoring him.
I sit up on the bed and stretch. I notice a note Weisz left on the nightstand; went for a run. I sigh. Frieda created a workout and practice routine for the entire team. There's no need for them to workout outside of the time allotted, but I know Weisz still feels like he has to catch up to the rest of the team.
I won't be able to stop him from going on his run since I have no idea where he could be, so the least I can do is to make his favourite post-workout smoothie for him to have when he gets back.
I get out of bed, throwing on a shirt before I leave the room and head to the kitchen. Breakfast is getting made right now and unfortunately, Kyle and Karla are on breakfast duty. At least Freida is with them so I doubt Kyle will say anything to me. He just glares at me when he sees me. I want to flip him off so badly, but I am Weisz's guest so I have to be polite.
At least, polite when Freida is around. If she wasn't in the kitchen, that would be a whole other story.
"Is Weisz awake?" Freida asks me.
"He is, but he's out on a run," I say. "I'm just going to make a smoothie for him when he gets back."
"Okay," Freida says. She then looks at Kyle. "You will apologize to him when he gets back, got it?"
"Got it," Kyle mumbles, but he doesn't seem to happy that Freida is making him apologize. He's apology is going to be insincere, I know it. I just hope that if he still thinks Weisz is some so-called 'charity case', he'll at least keep his mouth shut and stop instigating shit.
Weisz doesn't come back from his run for another twenty minutes, by which breakfast is ready, as well as the smoothie I've made for him. I hand him the smoothie and he smiles at me. "Thanks."
"No problem," I say. Freida, Kyle, and Karla are still in the kitchen, now plating breakfast for everyone, so I lower my voice for only Weisz to hear. "But you really shouldn't have gone at that morning run when Freida already has everything scheduled. I don't want you to overexert yourself."
"I won't," Weisz says. "Promise. I just woke up earlier than usual and didn't want to lie in bed."
"Now that Weisz is back, don't you have something to say to him, Kyle?" Freida asks.
Kyle scowls as he says, "I am so sorry for what I said. It wasn't cool of me. I won't say it again." His voice was deadpanned the entire apology. It's clear that he hasn't learned at all.
"And what exactly did you say that warrants an apology?" Frieda asks.
"I'm sorry for saying that you only made the team because of your cancer," Kyle says, still as deadpanned as before.
"And?" Freida asks.
"And for saying that you have a boyfriend for attention," Kyle says.
"Good. Now I better not hear you say anything like that again. I told you that I only found out that Weisz had cancer because of the medical forms the team had to fill out. He made the team because he's an amazing surfer. Got it?"
"Got it," Kyle mumbles. Though he doesn't sound genuine at all, at least Freida is taking this seriously. I don't know if she'll ever kick Kyle off the team if he keeps this shit up, but at least she's not letting him get away with it. Now if she'll only talk to the rest of the team about their exclusionary behaviour towards Weisz.
After everyone eats breakfast, the team has about an hour of downtime before their practice begins. Weisz tries to go for another run on the beach, but I stop him. "You just told me before breakfast that you're not going to overexert yourself," I say.
"I won't," Weisz says. "It's just a five minute run."
"No," I say. "You just ate breakfast and you need time to digest your food. Why else would Freida give you all the hour downtime before training?"
"Five minutes isn't going to kill me. I just--"
"No."
"You can't just tell me no, Reno. I'm my own person who can make my own choices and you can't stop me. I'm going to go for the very quick run and--"
"I'll put on my leather jacket if you stay back."
Weisz is silent for a few moments, trying to figure out if I'm serious, which I one-hundred percent am. I really need Weisz to stop pushing himself and I know he loves me in the leather jacket. Anything to get him to stay back. "You know, I think I'm actually going to stay inside for the downtime. I don't need to go on a run anyway."
I pat Weisz's cheek. "That's what I thought."
"You really will wear it, right?"
"Of course. I'm not a liar."
