chapter 16: reno is happy for weisz

~reno~

I've been watching Weisz's leg bounce anxiously up and down for the past ten minutes as we wait for his doctor's appointment to being. This is the appointment where we find out if he could be considered cancer free, so I get why Weisz is so anxious about it.

I mean, even I'm anxious about it, but I'm trying not to show it because I want to be supportive of Weisz. The last thing I want to do is to make him even more anxious.

When it's finally time for Weisz's appointment, I follow him to Dr. Valberg's office. The moment Weisz sits down, he says, "Alright, Doctor. Give it to me straight. What's the bad news?"

Dr. Valberg furrows his eyebrows. "Why are you assuming that it's bad news?"

"I figured it would be a lot easier for me to prepare for the worst," Weisz says. "That way, I wouldn't be disappointed if the news actually turns out to be bad news."

Dr. Valberg gives Weisz a soft smile. "Well, it's a good thing that I have good news for you. Great news, even. We didn't find a single cancer cell in your body, which means that you are officially in the maintenance stage."

Weisz smiles and breaths a sigh of relief. "That's good. That's really good." He then looks at me. "I still have treatment during the maintenance stage, but at this point its aim is to keep the cancer away."

Dr. Valberg nods in agreement. "And the treatment isn't as intense. You'll be taking the same medication as last time." He types something into his computer. "Mercaptopurine, taken once every morning. Then once a week, you'll take methotrexate. This is just to start off. If you notice that your health starts to decline again, we'll change things up, but I am confident that this will work."

Weisz's smile suddenly turns into a frown, despite being so happy to hear the news about his treatment. "It didn't work last time. It came back."

"I know," Dr. Valberg says. "And I can't guarantee that it won't come back, even if I am confident about the treatment. We never know what might come, but that's why your check ups are still important. Remember, if you didn't have any check ups, we wouldn't have been able to catch your cancer's return so easily."

"Right," Weisz says. "Right. Sorry, I just... I want to get back to doing something I did before my cancer, and I wouldn't want to drop it again."

"I assume it's a physical activity," Dr. Valberg says.

"Yeah," Weisz says. "Surfing. When I first had cancer, I had to limit all physical activity, but I never got back into it when I first went into maintenance. I was just afraid that I would have to stop it again."

"I understand," Dr. Valberg says. "I've seen many patience have to stop doing something they love."

"But Reno was able to convince me to try to get back into it," Weisz says. "Even if my cancer does somehow come back again, I shouldn't let that possibility stop me from ever getting back into it. Which reminds me, I should ask if I'm able to actually get back into physical activity."

Dr. Valberg nods. "Yes, you should be able to. It's completely up to you at this point. If your body can handle physical activity, then you're good to go. But you do have to remember to pace yourself constantly. Don't push yourself." He types something again on his computer before printing a sheet of paper. He hands it to Weisz. "Give this to your pharmacy to get your medication tomorrow. I already sent the prescription, but it should take a day to prepare."

Dr. Valberg discusses Weisz treatment a bit more before the appointment comes to an end. We walk out of the office as Weisz texts his family to let them know the outcome of the appointment. He then puts his phone back in his pocket before asking, "Want to go to the beach?"

I furrow my eyebrows. "Right now? To surf?"

"I wish," Weisz says. "I will eventually, but I first need to dig up my surfboard from the storage and make sure it's ready to be used. But I would still like to go to the beach. Relax. Check out the waves. Possibly see my insanely hot boyfriend shirtless."

"Well, how could I say no to that?" I ask.

The beach is closer to where we are now than our homes, so we decide to just go to the store to pick up some stuff. That way, we don't have to take a longer than necessary drive. We don't know how long we're going to stay at the beach, but we still grab a few snacks and drinks, as well as a beach blanket, which I will keep in my car from now on just in case Weisz and I take another impromptu trip to the beach.

The beach isn't too crowded at this time so it's easy for me and Weisz to find a spot to relax. As soon as we sit down on the blanket, Weisz says, "It's so hot. You wouldn't want to get a heat stroke, would you? You might want to take off that shirt of yours."

"You're ridiculous," I say, ignoring Weisz's request for now as I snack on some of the food we bought.

In the meantime, Weisz looks at something on his phone before saying, "No way. The waves are supposed to be killer this weekend. That's perfect timing to get back into surfing."

"I take it you want to take a trip here on the weekend?" I ask.

       "Yeah. Want to come too?"

"Of course. I'd love to watch you surf. We can even invite the others."

Weisz smiles. "Yeah, I'll text them now to ask if they want to, though coming here was one of our favourite things to do before I moved away so they'll probably come unless they have other plans."

It doesn't take long for the four of them to reply, all of them saying that they will love to come. Seeing their texts causes Weisz to smile brightly, which, in turn, causes me to smile as well. I absolutely love to see him so happy, especially after everything he has gone through. He deserves to be happy.
