chapter 32: reno enjoys summer for one reason only

~reno~

Weisz unbuttons the top of his shirt, then fans it away from his chest as he leans against the counter. There aren't any customers we have to serve right now since we're waiting for the kitchen staff to finish an order, so I don't have to feel guilty about checking out Weisz instead of doing my job.

"I thought the AC got fixed," Weisz says. "Why is it still so hot in the diner?"

"It broke again." I wipe the sweat away from my forehead. I don't know why I'm always so unfortunate to be on shift whenever the AC isn't working. We have a few fans going, but they're set up to face the tables for the customers instead. We don't get the air circulation by the counter. At least most people who come here during the heat wave take their food to go so they don't have to seat in the stuffy building.

       "What?" Weisz says. "When?"

"Last night. The owner ordered a new one instead because this one keeps breaking. We just have to wait for it to get delivered and installed."

Weisz sighs, continuing the fan his shirt. Man, I love the sight. I'll gladly suffer in a stuffy building for a few hours if it means getting to see the top of my boyfriend's chest. I don't even have a full view of his chest. I feel like someone in the medieval days looking at a woman's ankle. "I'm glad to have a break from training, but at this point, I'd rather do that since I'll get to at least be in the ocean."

"I mean, it's not too bad," I say.

Weisz looks at me. "Are you crazy? How is it not too bad?"

I don't give Weisz a vocal reply. I just glance down at his chest and look back at him. But unfortunately, my lovely boyfriend can be a bit too dim at times, so he doesn't seem to understand exactly what my gesture means. He furrows his eyebrows and looks down at his chest. "Weisz, I'm saying the heat gives me a chance to see you shirtless."

"My shirt is on. I can't take it off when we're at work."

"Sure, but the top buttons are undone so I get a little preview." I place a finger on his bare chest. "And maybe, I can get a full show after work. My dad's going on another date so we'll have the place all to ourselves."

"Do you find it weird that your dad is dating after all these years?" Weisz asks.

I drop my hand. "Fine, don't come over. Just change the subject instead."

"I'm just wondering how you feel about your dad dating. He has been single all your life. It has always just been you two. If things get serious, someone else could be added to your family."

The thought of my dating is weird, very weird, but it's not something I'm against. I know him dating someone doesn't change how he felt about my mom. There's no reason why he can't move on and still hold onto the love he had for my mom. "I'm fine with it. Really. I think it's great that he's starting to put himself out there."

"Have you met the woman he's dating yet?" Weisz asks.

I shake my head. "No, they're taking it slow. My dad wants to make sure things work out before he introduces me to her." I get it. Things are different when dating involves kids, when said kid is a teenager who has only had his dad his entire life. I understand why Weisz is curious about my feelings towards my dad dating. "So... Are you wanting to come over after work or not?"

"Of course I want to come over. Your room is air conditioned and mine isn't."

"Ah, so you're coming over just to have some cool air."
