jeongin had always been a ball of energy, his smile infectious, his laughter a melody that could brighten the darkest days. he was the light in every room, the person you turned to when life became too heavy.
but there were moments, subtle but undeniable, where his usual joy seemed to fade into the background. those moments were brief, yet they were enough to unsettle you, leaving you with a gnawing feeling that something wasn’t quite right.
it was one of those moments when you noticed it. the way jeongin’s eyes seemed clouded as he sat beside you on the couch, his fingers absently tracing the rim of his mug.
he hadn’t been his usual self lately, and though he tried to hide it, you could see the weight of his thoughts pressing down on him. you had been dating for a little over a year now, and you knew him well enough to recognize the signs.
“jeongin,” you said gently, your voice soft and inviting, “are you okay?”
he looked up, and for a moment, his eyes met yours, but there was a flicker of hesitation before he looked away. he put his mug down on the coffee table, the clink of ceramic filling the silence that stretched between you. “yeah,” he muttered, a little too quickly. “I’m fine.”
but you knew better. you knew that tone. the one that was meant to reassure but only served to raise more questions.
you weren’t sure if it was the way his shoulders slumped or the way his fingers nervously tapped the side of his mug, but something told you that he wasn’t being entirely honest.
you had learned to read the small signs, the tiny cracks in the facade he so carefully maintained. and right now, those cracks were beginning to show.
you shifted closer to him, the soft rustling of your clothes the only sound as you reached out to take his hand in yours.
his skin felt warm, but there was a tension in his grip, as if he was holding onto something more than just your hand. he was holding onto his own thoughts, his own worries, the ones that he didn’t want to burden you with.
you could feel the resistance in his fingers, the way he pulled just slightly away as if not ready to share his burden with anyone, not even you.
“I know you,” you said, your voice steady. “and I know when something’s bothering you. you don’t have to hide it from me, innie.”
he took a deep breath, and for a moment, you thought he might pull away completely, retreating into himself. but then, he let out a soft sigh, his eyes finally meeting yours with a vulnerability that made your heart ache. “I don’t want to worry you,” he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t want to be a burden.”
your heart clenched at his words, at the self-doubt that dripped from each syllable. you cupped his cheek gently, your thumb brushing over the soft skin, grounding him in the moment. “jeongin, you could never be a burden to me. you’re everything to me. whatever’s going on, we’ll face it together.”
he hesitated for a long moment, his gaze drifting to the floor as if the weight of his thoughts were too much to carry even in the safety of your embrace.
finally, he spoke, the words escaping his lips as if they had been building up for so long that they couldn’t be contained any longer.
“I’ve been feeling… anxious,” he admitted quietly. “I don’t know why, but it’s like this constant pressure on my chest, and no matter how much I try to distract myself, it’s always there. I don’t know how to make it stop, and i’m scared. scared that it’ll get worse, scared that I won’t be able to handle it, scared that… maybe I’m not enough for you.”
your heart shattered at his confession, the vulnerability in his voice leaving you breathless. you gently guided him to lean into your chest, your arms wrapping around him in a protective embrace.
you didn’t need to say anything right away. instead, you held him tightly, your fingers running through his hair in a soothing motion. the weight of his anxiety was palpable, and you wanted nothing more than to take it all away.
“I wish I could just make it go away for you,” you whispered, your words a promise. “but I need you to know, you are enough. you are more than enough. and i’m here for you. we’ll get through this together, okay?”
jeongin’s breath hitched, and for a moment, you feared he might break down in your arms. but instead, he pulled away slightly, his eyes red and glossy, but filled with something more - a glimmer of hope. “I don’t want to drag you down with me,” he muttered, his voice cracking. “I don’t want to hurt you.”
you cupped his face in both of your hands, your gaze unwavering as you looked him in the eyes. “jeongin, listen to me. you’re not hurting me. I want to be here for you, just like you’ve always been here for me. you don’t have to go through this alone. not now, not ever.”
his lips trembled as he fought back the tears that threatened to fall. you knew that his anxiety was something he had been battling in silence for a long time, and as much as he wanted to protect you from it, you understood that part of loving each other was sharing both the good and the bad. you weren’t going to let him push you away.
“I’m here,” you whispered, your forehead resting against his. “I’m not going anywhere.”
for a moment, everything was still. the weight of the world seemed to lift slightly, and jeongin’s breathing steadied in the calm of your presence. you both sat there, holding onto each other, finding comfort in the shared silence.
days passed, and though the anxiety didn’t vanish overnight, things started to change. jeongin began to open up more, sharing his fears, his worries, and the things that kept him up at night.
you were there every step of the way, reminding him that his feelings were valid, that it was okay to not be okay sometimes. slowly, the heavy weight of his thoughts became lighter, and though he still had bad days, he began to trust that you were there to support him, no matter what.
one evening, as you sat together on the couch, his head resting on your shoulder, jeongin spoke again, his voice soft but full of sincerity. “I feel a little better now. not perfect, but better. I think I’m learning to handle it, little by little. and I think it’s because of you.”
you smiled, your heart swelling with warmth. “you don’t have to be perfect, jeongin. you’re already amazing just the way you are.”
he smiled back, the light returning to his eyes, the darkness that had once clouded them now dissipating, even if just a little. and in that moment, you knew that no matter what life threw at you, you would always face it together.
the weight of anxiety, though not gone entirely, felt a little less heavy now. and as long as you were by his side, jeongin knew that he could face anything.
