Chapter One:
Meredith was about to start talking, when Lexie's phone started to buzz.
"I'm so sorry Mom, it's Mark" Lexie smiled as she mentioned her fiancées name.
That's right. Lexie Shepard and Mark Torres.
Callie adopted a two day old baby boy from England six months before Lexie was born. She named him Mark, after Sofia's Daddy and her best friend.
It was pretty ironic when Lexie and Mark started to take a liking to each other. They started dating when they were sixteen, and now they're engaged.
It always warmed Meredith's heart to think that Lexie and Mark's namesakes got to have the happy future together that they never had a chance at.
"Okay, he was just checking in. I'm sorry" Lexie smiled as she turned her phone off.
Meredith smiled "it's okay darling"
With that, she started her story.

Meredith's POV:
I was at joes bar the night before my first day of work.
I know most first year surgical interns didn't usually want a hang over before they're very first day, but I needed something to take the pressure off.
The hospital, Seattle Grace, is the same hospital that my Mother did her residency at. My mother happened to be THE Ellis Grey.
She was one of the best of her time. Everyone who knew her during her residency always said; 'she walked into that OR a resident, and she walked out a legend'
My mother won three Harper Avery awards, and was always at work. I was always all alone, because the demands of surgery placed a rank higher on her scale then her only child.
But now, the brilliant mind of THE Ellis Grey is sitting in a nursing home, slowly dying of Alzheimer's. It was a sorry sight to see someone who was as talented and extraordinary as my mother suddenly not even remember her own name.
I sighed, and sat down at the bar. I ordered a drink and began to worry about tomorrow. It was my very first day, and I knew for a fact that some of the older doctors would know who my mother is. I promised her before she lost her mind completely that I wouldn't tell a soul she was in a nursing home. She was traveling as far as anyone else was concerned.
I was kinda tipsy by the time a really handsome guy sat down next to me. He had gorgeous dark hair, striking blue eyes and a kind smile. "Is this seat taken?" He asked, pointing to the bar stool next to me.
"Go ahead" I said as I sipped yet another drink.
"I'm Derek" he said "can I buy you a drink?"
Oh, so he was hitting on me? I smiled and nodded.
"I'm Meredith" I said as I tucked a piece of hair behind my ear.
We spent the rest of the night talking and laughing. Derek was a pretty nice guy, and nice guys were hard to come by.
But the next morning, I awoke on the couch in the living room. And Derek was next to me.
"Crap, crap crap" I said as I realized I was going to be late if I didn't hurry up.
"Okay, you have to leave" i said as I threw a pillow at.....Daniel? Oh crap, in all of my panicking I forgot the guys name!
"Nice seeing you...." I trailed off as I tried to remember his name.
"Derek" he finished for me.
I nodded "well I trust you know the way out, I have to go get ready before I'm late for my first day of work"
With that, I left to shower and change before heading to the hospital.
**************************
I ran into the OR that the rest of the interns were walking around in. The chief of surgery, Dr. Webber, was explaining how many of us would fail out of the intern program, how many of us would switch to an easier specialty and how many of us would actually make it as surgeons.
After that, we were sent to the locker room to get into some scrubs and find the resident that would be our mentor.
"I hear there's a model" grumped another intern. Christina I think her name was.
All the other interns were called and assigned to their resident. The only people left included me, Christina, a short nervous looking guy with brown hair, and a blonde girl who was (obviously) the model that was mentioned.
Our names got called, and we went to meet our resident.
"Great, we got stuck with the nazi" Christina said, as she walked with the rest of us "I hear she's tougher than all the other residents combined"
"Maybe she isn't so bad, maybe she's nice" the blonde girl said.
"Let me guess, your the model" Christina said, looking at the girl.
I could tell this would be a long day. But it was about to get interesting.
While I was running some labs, on my first 48 hour shift that all interns had to work their first day, I saw an extremely familiar face.
It was Derek, the guy who I met in the bar.
He was wearing dark blue scrubs. Attending's scrubs.
Before I could run in the opposite direction, he smiled and walked towards me.
"Well, this is the first day of work you were talking about" he chuckled.
"You work here!?" I gasped. He nodded, smiling one of those charming little smiles.
"I'm Dr. Derek Shepard, head of neurosurgery"
Great, not only was he handsome, he was smart too.
