The next time I woke up, it was to the sounds of creaking metal. I shot up and had to force back a scream of pain that coursed through my shoulder. Superboy felt me move from him and he suddenly heard the creaking too. He gently pulled me back and pressed a finger to my lips to tell me to be quiet. Well NO DIP Sherlock!
He slowly got up and silently crept forward. I switched the vision on my mask to night-vision and looked around me. I saw something lurking about ten yards away next to another park bench. I tapped Conner on the shoulder and pointed to the robotic figure.
I suddenly remembered what Superboy had told me and I felt him tense up. He then scooped me up and crouched down low. It was a good thing he had super strength, otherwise this would be impossible for him to maneuver like that. Taking one step at a time, he slowly carried me away from the park and silently carried me down the street.
We were almost to a spot where we could run, when a crow cawed right next to us. The robot whipped it's head around and made an ear splitting howling noise. It charged at us and Superboy kicked it into high gear. But the robot was to fast. It shoved cars and other things out of its way as it ran towards us and Superboy suddenly jumped into the air. We sailed over tops of buildings, but as he landed, it jarred my whole body and I whimpered in pain.
The sound attracted the huge robot and it howled again. It hit Conner in the back and I was thrown forward. I screamed as I landed and scrambled up to my feet, trying to block out the pain.
"Run!" Conner yelled back to me as he punched the robot.
I did as he said and looked over my shoulder back at him. A pit formed in my stomach as I abandoned my friend to try and save myself. But there was no time to think about that now. I had to do what he demanded or else I WOULD die. I tried to use my abilities to fly, but apparently I used every muscle in my body and I cried out in pain again. So, I continued to do my best to run. But as I did, the stitches started to come undone on my back and I started to panic. I prayed that Superboy and Nightwing were amazing at what they did when it came to first aid.
I passed by houses whose lights were turned on to see all of the commotion. The people all gave me bewildered looks. Who could blame them? I was a shirtless girl who was running down the street covered in bandages running away from a giant robot.
There was suddenly a car that had driven up to me that I knew all too well.
The Bat Mobile. Much more impressive on the inside. I hijacked it once. Of course, Batman tracked it down but found it crashed into a ditch.
Nightwing stepped out of the car and I fell into his arms. Pain blinded me and I felt my head spinning. The next thing I knew, I was in the car next to him. He hit the petal hard and the car shot forward quickly. I hissed in pain as I hit the wound on my shoulder.
"We...have-to...go-back...for-Conner," I said as I bit back the tears.
"I know," Nightwing said demonically. He suddenly yanked on the wheel and spun the car around. I gasped again and I saw Nightwing's hand grip the wheel tighter.
We finally made it to Conner who was pounding on the robot. Unfortunately, the robot was just as stubborn as he was and wouldn't stay down, even after he had practically torn it in half. Nightwing then jumped out of the car and shot the robot with something. The robot was electrocuted and was finally still. I sighed with relief and laid my head back on the seat.
Superboy must've heard it because he ran over to the door and opened it. He sighed when he saw me and said, "Thank God."
I smiled back and looked to Nightwing. "You were late to the party," I said hoarsely.
Nightwing huffed. "Yeah, I guess I was. Are you two alright?"
"Other then still unable to do much because of getting shot?" I replied. "Fantastic!"
"You are such a smartass," he said while laughing. "The robots got to the Batcave, but left when they thought that no one was there. Apparently, they're just after members of the League and the other team. I contacted the rest of the team and they were able to fight them off for the most part. Several people got hurt pretty badly and it took the whole League to stop them all."
I sighed and said, "At least no one died. Any idea who's behind all of this?"
"None," Nightwing responded.
"That-would-be-me," a robotic like voice said. "The-Brain."
We all looked to see who the voiced belonged to and I saw the two boys clench their fists and get into fighting positions.
"I-would-not-attack-me-if-I-were-you," the voice continued.
I was suddenly yanked out of the car and the barrel of a gun was pressed against my head. I was being held by something brown and fuzzy and very rank. It must've been tall because I was no where near the ground. My arms were pinned to the side and there was no way of getting out of the iron grip wrapped around my body.
"Blue Jay!" Nightwing shouted and turned to an even weirder thing.
It was as tall as my waist and there appeared to be a brain inside of the machine like object. Their were to glowing things that must've been the eyes and another for a mouth.
"Let her go!" Conner protested. "She has nothing to do with this!"
"On-the-contrary," The Brain said. "She-has-everything-to-do-with-it. She-withholds-vital-information-that-we-require. But-perhaps-she-does-not-know-what-we-speak-of. Her-genes-carry-the-genetic-potential-to-turn-into-something-amazing.She-does-not-know-it-however. Which-is-why-we-need-her-alive. Otherwise-I-would-disect-her-brain."
I felt a chill go down my spine. I had a feeling that this had something to do with my father. Whenever Mom told me about him, she always had a mixture of fear and admiration in her eyes.
There was a moment of silence and the two boys went back to back.
"You seem to have forgotten something," Nightwing said and smirked. "There are two of us and you can't fight. You need her alive, so you won't kill her. You shouldn't have told us that."
And, as if they both had the same idea, Superboy and Nightwing lashed out at whatever was holding me. While Nightwing yanked me out of the grip, Superboy knocked the gun aside and punched whatever it was in the face. I then found out that it was a gorilla. No wonder it stank. Nightwing held me tightly in his arms and
pressed my head closer to his. I was so relieved and I didn't realize how fast my heart had been racing.
"I gotcha," I heard him whisper into my ear. His voice was so soothing to me and I instantly calmed down. God, why me?
