"Selina!" I called from the downstairs kitchen. "Thanks for letting me crash here! I'm gonna go now!"
"Hold up!" she shouted and slid down the banister of the staircase. She landed in front of my small figure and gave me a hug. "Be safe, alright? And, it would be wise to stay off of the streets tonight..."
"Why is that?" I asked.
She sighed. "I got news from Harley. The Joker is planning something big tonight...something about getting rid of Batman for sure. You're only nine, Jay, and none of us want to see you get hurt. So, just be careful, alright? And don't let anyone else know that you know a lot about us. They WILL come after you, okay?"
I nodded. "Thanks, Selina."
I didn't listen to Cat Woman, well, I sort of did. I stayed off of the rooftops and steered clear of abandoned places. After all, who would suspect a little girl being the cause of all of this mess.
A month ago, I had accidentally set off a massive explosion at an old warehouse, and The Joker just happened to be there and apparently I inspired him to do something.
Set off a huge virus throughout Gotham City. Harley had given Selina a vaccine who also gave one to me. She was sort of like a mother to me, ever since mine OD'd out because of vertigo.
Why was I running around with the bad crowd? Well, back then, I didn't know any better, or I didn't care. I was useful to the badies, I suppose. I could fly. I didn't need wings either, I could just float in mid-air. Yay me!
I had decided to go to my mother's old apartment that had been boarded up because the landlord couldn't keep it. So, it was all mine. What a stroke of luck.
I had then gone around to the back of the apartment and looked over my shoulders to make sure that no one was watching. When I was sure that no one was looking, I floated up to the open window and landed neatly on the stained carpets. I set my backpack down on the floor and plopped down onto the matress.
"Well it took you awhile to get here," a young male voice said and I squeaked with surprise. The lights flickered on and a boy about ten years old stood in front of me. He had messy unkept black hair and a mask over his eyes. He had a lean figure with a black and red cape. There was an "R" over his heart in the front on a red vest. He wore black gloves and black boots.
"Who are you?" I demanded. and shot up out of the bed.
"Wait," he said and tilted his head to the side, "where's Blue Jay? Batman said she would be here?"
This guy didn't know who Blue Jay was. Well, Blue Jay was me. I decided to pretend a little bit. "Blue Jay left town a long time ago, buddy. She said something like this would happen. so who are you supposed to be? Boy Wonder or something?"
He slouched. "It's ROBIN! R.O.B.I.N! Robin! I'm Batman's sidekick!"
I lifted an eyebrow as if I wasn't impressed and I placed my hands on my hips. "Well, good for you. You aren't going to find her here, Boy Wonder. Now, please, get out of my home!"
"Home?" he asked with concern. "You live here?"
I bit my lips and looked around the apartment. It was pretty pitiful. "Yup."
"All alone?"
"Get out!" I shouted impatiently.
He flinched a little at my words. "But, you can't live all alone! Stay here! I'll go get help!"
"Don't bother," I spat back at him. "I don't need your help, and I don't want it, so go. There's nothing here for you."
He stepped forward. "I will save you, alright? I promise. I will always save you."
And with that, he took out a gadget, shot it, and then swung away. I watched him swing away, and it was as if he was flying effortlessly. It was like he was born and raised in the circus.
I sighed with relief as he left out of sight. That was close, too close. If Batman knew exactly who I was, then he would probably be coming here himself. I grabbed my backpack and floated back out of the window and decided to go crash again at Selina's a.k.a, Cat Woman's place. I straightened my blue tank-top and black cargo pants as I landed on the ground. I quickly ran down the street and back towards her.
I jogged for a little while until I reached her place and flew in through the window that she always left open for me. I landed silently and crept near to her room. I was about to rap on the door when I heard voices.
"Tell me where Blue Jay is," a deep dark voice demanded.
"What the hell do you want with her?" Selina demanded. "Leave her alone! She isn't a part of this. She knows nothing about the plan that is about to go down. You won't get anything out of her anyways."
There was a thump and then Robin's voice said, "Blue Jay wasn't where you said she would be. In her place was a girl a year younger then me. She said she had left town awhile ago."
I could not believe that he had actually believed me.
Selina chuckled. "Ha! I knew she would leave! She saw you coming a mile away, and then took the next flight out of here! She's long gone, Batman! Good luck finding anything out now!"
I relaxed. Selina had gotten the point and was trying to protect me, just like always. But what scared me was that Batman was here interrogating her. But she would have wanted me to stay hidden. I stepped back once and the floor board creaked under my sneakers.
The door swung open and I fell back behind the door. A very tall figure with a black cape and pointy things off of his head stepped out quickly. He didn't see me and I forced myself to remain calm. It's what Selina would want me to do.
"Who else is here?" he demanded. This must've been THE Batman! "Tell us, Cat Woman!"
Selina had suited up in her cat uniform and she stepped out with him. "No one! Now, get out!"
"You?" Boy Wonder said and I realized that he saw me.
Batman whirled around with a bat thing in his hand. He dropped his arm when he realized that he was aiming that at a kid. Cat Woman launched her self in front of me and shielded me from Batman and Robin.
"What's goin' on in here!?" a high pitched voice with a Boston accent shouted.
Harley.
Batman turned back and saw her blond bouncy pigtails skip up the stairs. "What-oh," she said when she saw Batman.
"Blue Jay!" she shouted when she saw me. "What's goin' on?"
"Blue Jay?" Robin asked and then turned to me. ""YOU"RE Blue Jay?"
"In the flesh," I replied and Cat Woman snarled at them both.
"Damn it, Harley!" she shouted
Batman relaxed all together after he threw the sharp thing at Harley, pinning her shoulder to the wall. "I wasn't aware that Blue Jay was a child, Cat Woman. You're trying to protect her? Why?"
"Maybe because she doesn't have anyone else to do it," she spat at him and crouched down in a defensive position. "Go. I know you too well. You won't hurt a child much less use them to get information.
Batman suddenly sprayed something in her face and she was knocked out cold. Robin stepped in towards me and reached out for me. "It's okay," he said softly. "We're not gonna hurt you..."
I flew into the air and kicked him straight in the head. I shot out of the window and flew high up into the sky. I looked back down at her house and sighed. I was sorry that I had to leave Selina, but I had to get out. I promised that I would stay safe, and getting out of there was the best plan.
