As thee morning continued, everyone gradually woke up. Superboy and M'gann completely avoided each other, but I could see the hurt in their eyes whenever they got a glance of each other, especially from Superboy.
Nightwing glanced over at me and narrowed his eyes. I lifted an eyebrow, "What? Whatever it was, I didn't do it! I swear!"
He walked over to me. "I'm amazed. Not even ONE little attempt?"
I rolled my eyes. "Oh, please. Again, I'm not going anywhere."
There was a sudden buzz and Batman's voice said, "Everyone to the mission room, now!"
I was still sitting down on the couch as everyone raced past me. Superboy walked past instead of running and he paused next to me. "You could come too, if you'd like. There's no harm in watching." He said it to me with a friendly smile.
So, I shrugged, got up, and followed him into the main room where Nightwing and I were sparring each other last night. Batman and Superman were both waiting there with screens in front of them. I stood next to Superboy and he watched intently.
"There was a massive explosion in Africa about a week ago," Batman began to explain. "We thought nothing of it, thinking that it could have just been a chemical reaction. But, a few hours later, people started getting very sick, with some sort of...virus. Boils have appeared all over their bodies and their skin becomes green with this virus. Also, the virus causes them to act irrationally, including acts of violence."
I froze at that. I knew exactly what that virus was. But how? Batman and Robin had destroyed the device YEARS ago. I looked down and tried to think what could have happened.
"Jay?" Superboy whispered to me. "You okay?"
I looked up with a neutral expression and said, "Yeah, all good."
He didn't look convinced, but he looked away from me. I looked around quickly and slowly and inconspicuously walked away from the group. I kept my eye on them until I reached the other room where I sighed and turned back around. I ran straight into Nightwing.
I gasped in surprise and he looked down at me. "And where are you going in such a hurry? What? Know anything about that epidemic going on in Africa? You seem to be awfully nervous."
I curled my lip. "So? What if I do? If it's what I think it is, then there is no hope. Those people are goners. There is NOTHING you can do about it."
Was there something? Hell yes there was. Did I know? Uh huh. The antidote was literally doing nothing. That was the genius behind Joker's virus epidemic all those years ago. People would be constantly trying medication to cure it, but it would only make it worse. I was trying to give Nightwing a hint. I couldn't just give Harley away. I knew that she was behind this. She was head over heals for The Joker and everyone knew it. I remembered when she told me that she would make sure that his plan prevailed, one way or another.
Unfortunately, she helped raise me and I was not quick to betray her, even though both sides felt wrong. Ugh!
And with that, I stormed off away from him, but he grabbed my arm stopping me. "Jay, what aren't you telling me?"
I jerked my arm away from him and shot up into the air where he couldn't reach me.
"Damnit, Jay!" he shouted up at me and everyone else came into the room when they heard the commotion. "What's going on?" Superboy asked and then he saw me hovering in mid air.
Superman sighed and then flew up to me. I didn't even try to run, or fly, whatever. "Tell us what you know, Jasmine, please. There are innocent lives at stake here."
I turned and glared at him. "Don't you think I know that? But I can't tell you. There's a little thing called loyalty, and right now, it sure as hell isn't with you." I glared at Nightwing as I said that and he flinched. "Think about what I said, Nightwing. There is NOTHING you can do. NOTHING!"
He narrowed his eyes, but remained silent. Superman placed a hand on my shoulder and I jerked away from him. "Please, Blue Jay. No one else has to die..."
I closed my eyes and turned away.
"Nothing," Nightwing said and suddenly lifted his gaze. "That's the answer, isn't it? Now I see!"
"What is it?" Batman asked.
"Nothing is exactly the answer! Think about it! The Joker was insane! It'd be exactly like him to think of something like that!" he replied and then looked back up at me with a lighter expression. "Thank you, Jay."
I snorted. "You didn't hear anything from me. you got that? I said absolutely nothing."
