October 17, 1997, Friday.

All students of Xiaoda Middle School gathered on the playground in the morning to attend a special school assembly to witness the oath taking by Senior Three classes for the "Guangzhou Adult Commitment Day" on October 18. Principal Zhang Ruochu (pron.: jhang rwor choo) delivered a sincere and touching speech, which was simple yet profound. He said that once turning eighteen, one not only enjoyed more rights but also shouldered more responsibilities. He hoped that the students could love their country, be filial to their parents, respect their teachers, care for their peers, and contribute their youth and enthusiasm to the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the prosperity of the motherland, while also writing the most wonderful stories of their own lives.

Guan Xuchen listened and nodded thoughtfully, deeply touched. Meanwhile, he couldn't help glancing at Gao Xinglang, who was standing beside him but in the neighboring class. He thought to himself, "If only Lang could always be by my side in my future life."

At this moment, Gao Xinglang noticed Guan Xuchen staring at him and smiled, asking, "Soupy, what are you thinking about?"

Wei Qing, standing behind Gao Xinglang, joked, "Your Soupy must be thinking, 'Lang is so handsome and charming!'"

"Nonsense!" Gao Xinglang and Guan Xuchen said simultaneously.

Seeing this, Wei Qing continued to tease, "Look at how in tune you two are, just like a loving couple."

Several boys around them chuckled softly.

Just then, the head teachers of the two classes at the front of the line turned around and pointed at them. Wei Qing stopped talking, and Gao Xinglang and Guan Xuchen also kept silent.

After a while, Gao Xinglang whispered in Guan Xuchen's ear, "Soupy, are you angry about what Wei Qing said?"

Guan Xuchen looked a bit astonished. He stole a glance at Wei Qing, who was chatting with another boy, and then smiled, saying, "I'm not angry. He was just joking."

Upon hearing this, Gao Xinglang smiled slightly and said, "I also think he's just being sharp-tongued and likes to blabber nonsense, just like Bro Feifan."

After the ceremony, the students went back to their classrooms one after another and prepared for class.

When Gao Xinglang and Guan Xuchen were walking towards the teaching building, Wei Qing came over and said to Gao Xinglang with a grin, "PE rep., I have something to tell you."

"Just shoot," Gao Xinglang replied gruffly.

"Well, the thing is, I don't want to take part in the table tennis match of the school sports meet," Wei Qing said with a smile, tentatively.

"How can you do that!" Gao Xinglang looked somewhat irritated. "Earlier you said you didn't want to play football and wanted to play table tennis. I made the change for you. Now you're saying you don't want to play table tennis. What exactly do you want?"

"Well, I didn't think it through before," Wei Qing explained with an apologetic smile. "I think I prefer playing basketball. I wonder if I can participate in the basketball game?"

"There are no more spots for the basketball!" Gao Xinglang suddenly snapped in anger, "How about I withdraw and let you take my place? Or you should replace me as the PE rep.!"

After saying that, he put his hand on Guan Xuchen's shoulder and continued walking upstairs, ignoring Wei Qing.

Guan Xuchen hadn't seen Gao Xinglang this angry for a long time. While he thought Gao Xinglang's angry expression was quite manly, he was also a bit intimidating.
