March 12, 1998, Thursday,

There were still five minutes left before the end of the second English class. Ms. Jiang Xiuning closed her textbook and said with a warm smile, "Alright, that's all for today's lesson. I have one more thing to tell you all. Last semester's variety show enriched the students' extracurricular lives and honed their skills, which the school highly supports and affirms. Therefore, the teachers in our grade have discussed it and decided to organize an English Arts Festival this semester."

"Great! There will be wonderful performances to watch again!" Hong Yilong and several other boys cheered.

"This time, you can't just be onlookers but also need to participate," Ms. Jiang looked at those boys and continued with a smile, "Each class needs to perform two programs. One is a designated program: an English stage play. The other is a free-choice program: an English song, an English poetry recitation, an English sketch, or even an English cross-talk—anything related to English will do."

"Hong Yilong, would you like to sing an English song then?" Ms. Jiang asked with a cheerful smile.

The whole class burst into laughter.

Hong Yilong blushed and waved his hands while shaking his head.

"You can think about it first. I heard from the music teacher that you sing quite well," After the students quieted down a bit, Ms. Jiang continued, "Other students who are interested can also take this opportunity to show their skills. The performance is tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, March 27. The programs for our class will be led and organized by Tang Minsheng, the class monitor, and Guan Xuchen, the English subject representative. Tang Minsheng, Guan Xuchen, are you confident in organizing our class's programs well?" Standing on the podium, Ms. Jiang asked with an expectant look.

Tang Minsheng stood up and replied loudly, "Ms. Jiang, don't worry. Guan Xuchen and I will definitely organize our class's programs for the English Arts Festival well!"

Ms. Jiang nodded in satisfaction, motioned for Tang Minsheng to sit down, then looked at Guan Xuchen, who was in a daze, and asked with a smile, "Guan Xuchen, how about you? Are you confident?"

Upon hearing Ms. Jiang's words, Guan Xuchen first felt as if a thunderclap had struck out of nowhere, then silently groaned inwardly. Studies were already intense for Senior Two students. And now he had to organize two programs within two weeks. He truly felt it was just like the title of that Tom Cruise movie: "mission impossible".

But at this moment, he could only brace himself, stand up, and reply, "Y-yes, I'm confident."

"That's good" Ms. Jiang nodded in satisfaction, motioning for Guan Xuchen to sit down, then added, "Everyone should actively sign up to participate and strongly support the class monitor and the English representative in this task. If you have any good ideas, feel free to share them with them. Let's work together to showcase the elegance of Class 5, Senior Two. Do you all have confidence?

"Yes!" The entire class responded in unison. Guan Xuchen, however, felt rather helpless.

After the recess exercise, Guan Xuchen saw Gao Xinglang chatting and laughing with Guan Muxue, the English representative from the neighboring Class 4, and that familiar, indescribable pang of bitterness welled up in his heart again.

Just as Guan Xuchen was lost in thought, Tang Minsheng, the monitor of Class 5, walked over with a serious expression and said, "Guan Xuchen, I'd like to discuss with you some initial ideas about the English Arts Festival. Do you have a moment now?"

"Oh, sure." Guan Xuchen glanced at Gao Xinglang, who was still chatting and laughing with Guan Muxue not far away, and replied.
