October 6, 1999, Wednesday.
Guan Xuchen opened his eyes groggily, and bright sunlight poured into his view. Subconsciously, he thought, "Oh no, I'm gonna be late for school! Why didn't Mom and Dad wake me up?"
After a few seconds, he came to his senses and realized he was in his university dorm room. After over half a month of military training and the five-day National Day holiday, today finally marked the official start of his college studies.
Guan Xuchen picked up the alarm clock by his bed and saw it was already 9 o'clock. His heart skipped a beat with panic, but he soon remembered he only had classes in the third and fourth periods that morning—so he hadn't set an alarm the night before. That thought helped him calm down a little.
He climbed out of bed, only to find his roommates were nowhere to be seen. Puzzled and a bit annoyed, he wondered, "Doesn't the third period begin at 10:30? Why didn't they wake me up before leaving for class?"
Just then, he heard the sound of a guitar coming from outside the door. He stepped out and saw Wen Yuwei sitting on a chair playing. He asked with a smile, "Wen Yuwei, why are you so relaxed? Did you have breakfast already?"
Wen Yuwei looked up at him, smiling in reply, "Yeah, I did. Thanks for the pastries you brought from home, by the way. I saw there's still time, so I decided to practice my guitar a bit."
Guan Xuchen then asked, confused, "Why did everyone else leave so early?"
"They went to save seats," Wen Yuwei strummed the guitar strings as he asked casually, "Why don't you head over early to save a seat for a girl?"
Upon hearing that, Guan Xuchen stared blankly and asked back, "Why—why would I do that?"
Wen Yuwei stopped strumming, feigning mystery as he said, "Oh, it's not a strict rule or anything—just a campus legend."
"A campus legend?" Guan Xuchen grew even more confused.
Wen Yuwei burst out laughing, then went on to explain, "Apparently, if a girl's willing to sit next to you in the first class of the first semester, you'll soon get a girlfriend—and that girl sitting next to you will probably be her."
He paused for a moment, then added, "A senior student told us this when he dropped by a couple of days ago. You were home then, so you missed it."
"If a girl you just met is willing to sit next to you, she probably has a crush on you..." Guan Xuchen chuckled, "That senior student wasn't just messing with you guys, was he?"
"I think so too—that's why I'm not doing something that silly. Once you finish breakfast, let's head to class together." With that, Wen Yuwei lowered his head and went back to playing the guitar.
Guan Xuchen returned to his room, got washed up, and then took out his breakfast—the pastries he had bought with Gao Xinglang at the Tianhe Sports Center Food Festival the previous Saturday. After packing his things, he headed to the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) building with Wen Yuwei.
Around 10 o'clock, the two arrived at Room 402 in the FLS building—the classroom for their third and fourth periods of English intensive reading that day. Sure enough, the first four rows were already "taken" by other boys from their dorm or the neighboring Dorm 607. Those boys had left backpacks or books on the desks next to them, clearly saving seats for girls. It was still half an hour before the third period started, and no girls had shown up in the classroom yet.
Wen Yuwei gave Guan Xuchen a meaningful look, as if to say, "Told you so." Then he walked over to Shan Kai, who was sitting in the second row. With a playful grin, he asked intentionally, "Shan Kai, can I sit here?"
