July 4, 2003, Friday. Around nine o'clock in the evening, at the International Departure Hall on the third floor of the terminal of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
After checking in and dropping off their luggage at the counter, Gao Xinglang and Fan Yueming were saying goodbyes to their parents.
"Mingming, this is your first time going so far away. Be careful with everything. Remember to call Mom and Dad often, and make sure to come back and visit us when you have time during the holidays." Mrs. Fan sobbed, repeating her words, then hugged her daughter tightly, reluctant to let go.
"Alright, our daughter's all grown up. It's time we let her fly." Mr. Fan wiped his misty eyes with the back of his hand, trying to calm his wife, then said to Gao Xinglang in a solemn tone, "Xinglang, you must take good care of Mingming when you get to the UK!"
"Don't worry, Uncle. I'll protect Mingming and take good care of her." Gao Xinglang took Fan Yueming's hand and replied with a firm expression.
He then spoke earnestly to Mr. and Mrs. Fan, "Uncle, Auntie, you must also take good care of yourselves. We'll come back to visit you when we have time during the holidays."
He then turned to his own parents with a sad expression and said, "Dad, Mom, please take good care of yourselves too..."
His voice cracked as he spoke, and he bent down to hug his mother, clinging to her for a long time.
Mrs. Gao secretly wiped away her tears, then told her son to look up, and smiled, "Xinglang, be careful with everything when you're in the UK. I believe you can take good care of yourself and Mingming."
Gao Xinglang glanced at Fan Yueming beside him and nodded at his mother.
Mr. Gao patted his son on the shoulder and said calmly, "Remember to call us as soon as you arrive to let us know you're safe. If you run into any trouble, go to your uncle in the UK for help."
Gao Xinglang nodded.
Mr. Gao patted his son's shoulder again, then said to his wife and Fan Yueming's parents, "Alright, they still need to go through security. Let's head back first so we don't hold them up for their flight."
The parents of both families finally said their reluctant goodbyes to the young couple and turned to walk toward the escalator in the middle of the departure hall. They turned back several times to wave at their children as they walked. The escalator was no more than two hundred meters away, but it took the four of them nearly five minutes to reach it.
After watching their parents' figures disappear down the escalator, Gao Xinglang and Fan Yueming both let out a soft sigh at the same time, then smiled at each other. Fan Yueming pointed toward the security checkpoint and said, "Let's go over there."
Gao Xinglang muttered an "Oh", but made no move to leave. Instead, he stood on tiptoe and scanned the crowd around him.
"Are you still waiting for Guan Xuchen?" Fan Yueming smiled faintly and asked, "Didn't he say he had to work overtime tonight and wouldn't be able to come see you off?"
"Yeah, that's what he said when he called me this afternoon..." Disappointment flashed across Gao Xinglang's face, but he quickly forced a bright smile and said, "Come on, let's go through security."
As the two were about to reach the security checkpoint, Gao Xinglang suddenly heard a familiar voice calling his name from behind, "Lang, Lang! Gao Xinglang!"
He turned around, and it was indeed Guan Xuchen.
Guan Xuchen was running straight toward him, his suit wrinkled, shirt soaked with sweat, tie askew, and hair messy.
