November 11, 2000, Saturday. Shortly after 8 p.m. at the Arts Center of Guangzhou Yixian University (GYU), the finals of the school's Arts Festival Singing Competition were in full swing. The stage setup was simple yet brimming with atmosphere. An LED screen above displayed "The 20th Yixian University Arts Festival Singing Competition Finals", while the large central stage screen alternated between shots of the performers on stage and the audience in the seats from time to time. Additionally, the spotlights mounted on the stage ceiling and floor would project different colors and light rhythms in sync with the tempo and melody of each song being performed.

The audience watching the show below was in high spirits. Many waved flashlights or glow sticks, and some even held homemade flashing cheering signs to root for their favorite singers.

On stage, Wen Yuwei was sitting playing the guitar and singing "My Deskmate".

...

Back then, the sky was always so blue, and the days always seemed to pass so slowly.

You kept saying graduation was still far away, yet in the blink of an eye, we all went our separate ways.

Who ever met the sentimental you? Who ever comforted you in tears?

Who ever read the letter I wrote to you? Who ever threw it into the wind?

...

Wen Yuwei seemed to have deliberately lowered his pitch by half a key, creating a slightly husky yet delicate vocal effect. Combined with the smooth and melodious guitar tunes, his performance had the audience below utterly enthralled.

After finishing his performance, Wen Yuwei stood up and bowed to the audience, who still seemed immersed in his soul-stirring singing. There was a brief silence of about a second before thunderous applause and cheers erupted. A few bold girls even shouted in unison, "Wen Yuwei, I love you!"

Just then, a boy—seemingly joking around—yelled out, "Wen Yuwei, I love you too!"

The audience burst into laughter, and then showered Wen Yuwei with even more enthusiastic applause and cheers.

Wen Yuwei bowed to the audience once again, then picked up his guitar. Smiling and waving to the crowd, he stepped off the stage and returned to the contestants' area in the front row, taking the seat next to Guan Xuchen.

Guan Xuchen sincerely praised him, saying, "William, you sang this even better than Lao Lang's original version!"

Gao Xinglang, sitting on the other side of Guan Xuchen, also grinned and said to Wen Yuwei, "Yeah, just look how popular you are with the girls. It seems the championship is definitely yours."

Wen Yuwei gave a faint smile and teased back, "I'm not nearly as popular with the girls as you are, Prince Lang."

After two more groups of contestants finished their performances, the host—Wei Yingjun (pron.: way ying joon), the "Beauty of the Business School" of the 1999 Cohort, stepped onto the stage again. With a sweet smile, she said, "Up next is another duo in the pair category. I'm sure many of you have been looking forward to seeing these two handsome guys. Let's give a warm round of applause to the 'Chen & Lang' duo!"

As soon as Wei Yingjun finished speaking, thunderous applause and cheers broke out from the audience. Many girls even screamed, "Gao Xinglang! Gao Xinglang!"

"Tommy, Prince Lang, break a leg!" Wen Yuwei smiled and cheered for Guan Xuchen and Gao Xinglang. He stood up to make way for them to pass through.

Gao Xinglang picked up his guitar, stood up together with Guan Xuchen, said "thank you" to Wen Yuwei, and then walked toward the stage.
