January 19, 2000, Wednesday. After lunch, Guan Xuchen, Wen Yuwei, and Ying Congyun strolled toward their dorm, chatting and laughing.
"Finally done with exams!" Wen Yuwei stretched lazily, slinging an arm over Guan Xuchen's shoulder, and grinned. "Tommy, wanna hit the Computer Lab this afternoon?"
"Sure, Prince Wen." Guan Xuchen said eagerly, "I've been so busy with exams lately. I haven't had time to surf the net. Let's head over after the afternoon nap."
"Tommy, are you going home tomorrow?" Ying Congyun suddenly asked.
"Yes, if there's nothing special. Or maybe the day after." Guan Xuchen smiled and asked, "Why? What's up?"
"Oh, well... the girls in our class want to go barbecue at Xiaogang Park tomorrow or the day after. Just wondering if you'd like to join us." Ying Congyun replied with a smile.
"Sure, let's all go together then." Guan Xuchen agreed without hesitation, then asked, "Ethan, wanna hit the Computer Lab with us this afternoon?"
"Nah, I'm skipping it," Ying Congyun yawned, sounding resigned. "Shan Kai was gaming until past midnight again last night. I barely slept. He seems to be going out this afternoon, so I'll just sleep a bit longer."
When the three got back to the dorm, they found Huang Lihong taking a nap, He Dianzhu lying on his bed listening to music, while Zhuo Kai, Lv Runfa, and Dai Changshuai were nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, Gao Xinglang was sitting at Guan Xuchen's desk by his bed, flipping casually through the English textbook Guan had left there.
"Lang, what brings you here?" Guan Xuchen hurried over to the desk, excitement in his voice. "Did you guys finish your exams too?"
Yep, just finished my last exam this morning. Gao Xinglang looked up, greeted Wen Yuwei and Ying Congyun, then pointed to a copy of newspaper on the desk. Smiling at Guan Xuchen, he said, "Soupy, the millennium special edition of the Yangcheng Metropolis Daily you wanted, I've found it for you."
"Ah, really?" Guan Xuchen picked up the thick copy of newspaper, excitement in his voice. "Thank you so much, Lang."
"No problem. I'm glad you like it." Gao Xinglang grinned broadly.
Ying Congyun and Wen Yuwei also gathered around to look at the commemorative paper.
Wen Yuwei said thoughtfully, "This edition was really hard to get. On the 1st, I went out early and visited several newsstands nearby before finally getting one copy."
Upon hearing this, Gao Xinglang chuckled and said, "You probably couldn't get this one at a newsstand, right?"
"Prince Lang, you don't believe me?" Wen Yuwei opened one of the desk drawers, pulled out a copy of newspaper, and placed it on the desk.
Ying Congyun examined both copies and said, a little confused, "Why do these two copies look different?"
"How can they be different? Aren't they both the commemorative edition of the Yangcheng Metropolis Daily?" Wen Yuwei retorted, clearly unconvinced.
Ying Congyun pointed to the two copies and explained, "Look, Prince Lang's copy has a gold masthead with the numbers 0520 next to it. But yours has a red masthead with no numbers."
Wen Yuwei studied them carefully, then looked up in astonishment, "Prince Lang, you—you mean—this is the limited edition with only 2,000 copies in the whole city?"
"Exactly," Gao Xinglang said with a proud smile.
Guan Xuchen examined the mastheads of both newspapers closely and confirmed Ying Congyun's observation. Looking uneasy, he said, "Lang, I only wanted the regular commemorative edition... How much is this limited edition? I—I'll give you the money..."
