After hanging up, Guan Xuchen went to the fridge and took the birthday cake Gao Xinglang had bought him two days earlier, stuck a candle in it, and lit it. He folded his hands tightly, closed his eyes, and whispered, "Great Heaven, please bless Gao Xinglang with safety, happiness, and joy forever. Please grant me this wish. Thank you!"
After making his wish, Guan Xuchen blew out the candle and began eating the cake. As he ate, tears fell unconsciously, and soon he was sobbing.
Guan Xuchen tasted salt and even bitterness in the cake, but he forced himself to swallow it. He then took two tissues from the box on the table, wiped his tears, and finished the cake.
After that, he took a photo album from the bookshelf, sat on the sofa, and flipped through it. The album contained photos of him and Gao Xinglang from childhood to adulthood: at the funfair in Dong Fang Amusement Park in junior middle school, by Swan Lake at Xiangjiang Safari Park in senior middle school, and in front of the library at the class reunion the year before.
At first, Guan Xuchen smiled as he looked, but before long, tears began to fall again.
After finishing with the photos, Guan Xuchen tidied up the things and went to take a shower.
After his shower, he pulled the large suitcase out of the closet and started packing. After packing his clothes and daily necessities, he came to the study, opened the bookcase and took out the delicate glass jar Gao Xinglang had given him eighteen years before. Inside the jar, there were not only the original lucky stars, but also several gold medals from basketball games, as well as other small gifts from Gao Xinglang: a plastic digital watch, Doraemon dolls, a Transformer burger toy, a bear-shaped eraser, a virtual pet egg, and more. Guan Xuchen had put inside everything that would fit.
He carefully wrapped the glass jar in newspaper and placed it inside his suitcase.
After packing, Guan Xuchen stood in front of the wardrobe for a long time. He reached for the pink shirt, then hesitated, put it back, and took the light blue one instead. He remembered that Gao Xinglang had once told him that light blue suited him well—it made him look energetic and handsome.
He put on the light blue shirt and a pair of black dress trousers, dried his hair with a hairdryer, and combed it neatly. Then he opened the nightstand drawer, took out the Swiss watch Gao Xinglang had given him not long ago, and put it on.
Then he came to the study again, sat at his desk, took out a sheet of paper and a pen, and wrote a few lines. After that, he held down the note on the desk with a paperweight.
When he had finished everything, Guan Xuchen picked up his suitcase and walked out the door. He turned to glance at the empty house, locked the door, and took the elevator downstairs. He hailed a taxi, and said to the driver, "The airport, please."
On the way to the airport, Guan Xuchen turned on his phone, put on his headphones, watched the night scenery outside the window in silence, and listened quietly to Leslie Cheung's Farewell Words:
Saying goodbye, lost in goodbye
My heart feels utterly confused
My mood is in chaos, my feelings in chaos
As if the depression in my heart has never faded
Saying goodbye, the dream is far behind me
I feel the sorrow slowly settling down
So many old memories, so many old dreams
