Guan Xuchen returned to the Student Activity Center and spotted Fan Yueming standing beside a shopping cart. She was chatting and laughing with two tall, handsome boys while picking up a box wrapped in colored paper. She glanced at the words written on it, then started unwrapping the colored paper—seemingly eager to check out the gift inside right there and then.
Guan Xuchen found the box strangely familiar; it looked exactly like the one Tu Jingli had stuffed into that chubby boy's hands at noon.
"Why would that boy give that gift to Fan Yueming when he had received it from Tu Jingli?" Guan Xuchen felt confused. Then he remembered the chubby boy saying, "That doesn't seem right." and his suspicion only grew stronger.
Thinking back to how sharply Fan Yueming had spoken to Gao Xinglang just now, Guan Xuchen had initially planned to stay out of it. But after hesitating for a few seconds, he still walked quickly over to Fan Yueming and said coldly, "Fan Yueming, you shouldn't open this gift."
By this time, Fan Yueming had already taken off the wrapping paper and the ribbon on the box, ready to open it. When she heard what Guan Xuchen said, she paused, a look of confusion on her face, and asked, "Why?"
Before Guan Xuchen could answer, the two boys next to Fan Yueming stepped in front of him, folded their arms across their chests, and snapped aggressively, "Who do you think you are?" "Mind your own business!" "Put the gift down and get lost!"
Seeing how fierce the two boys looked, Guan Xuchen felt a twinge of fear and secretly hoped Gao Xinglang would come back suddenly.
At that moment, Fan Yueming acted like a queen—she lifted her right hand to signal the two boys to step back, then arched an eyebrow and asked Guan Xuchen, "Why shouldn't I open this gift? Did you give it to me, and now you want it back?"
Guan Xuchen glanced at the two "bodyguards" on either side, shook his head, and didn't know how to explain. He just stammered, "Anyway... you just... don't open it..."
Fan Yueming looked at the box, thought for a moment, then held it out to the "bodyguards" and ordered, "You two open it for me."
The "bodyguards" glanced at each other but didn't take the box.
"Cowards!" Fan Yueming snapped, then reached out to open the box herself.
"I told you not to open it!" Seeing this, Guan Xuchen stretched out his hand to grab the box.
In the scuffle, the box dropped to the floor and popped open. A stream of liquid sprayed out—it missed Fan Yueming and her "bodyguards" but splattered all over Guan Xuchen's face and clothes.
At first, Guan Xuchen had no idea what the liquid was. Frightened, he let out a sharp "Ah!" He touched his face, held his hand up to his eyes to check, then glanced down at his clothes. Only when he realized it was just ink did he let out a small sigh of relief.
Just then, he noticed Fan Yueming, the "bodyguards," and a few other students staring at him and snickering. He wished he could find a hole to crawl into. He shot Fan Yueming with a sharp glare, then fled to the restroom to wash his face, amid the sound of giggles.
After scrubbing his face for a while in the restroom, Guan Xuchen could still see faint ink stains on his cheeks. What's worse, a big blotch of ink had ruined his newly bought light blue sweater.
"Oh no. If this doesn't come out, Mom's definitely going to yell at me when I get home," he thought. Guan Xuchen felt bitter regret. "I should've just minded my own business," he told himself.
When Guan Xuchen walked out of the restroom, he headed straight for the door of the Student Activity Center. He planned to go back to the dorm, wash his face thoroughly with facial cleanser, and then soak the sweater in water to see if he could get the ink stains out.
