October 8, 2000, Sunday. Gao Xinglang and Fan Yueming visited Dong Fang Amusement Park for fun. At the basketball shooting booth during the Olympic-themed carnival, Gao Xinglang showed off his excellent skills and won five coupons.
Holding up the coupons in his hand, Gao Xinglang said excitedly to Fan Yueming, "Mingming, look! We already have five coupons. Let's get a few more, and then we can redeem prizes!"
"Sure!" Fan Yueming replied happily, then pointed to a nearby game booth with a hint of excitement and said, "They have rubber band skipping over there!"
With that said, she took Gao Xinglang's hand and skipped toward that game booth.
Gao Xinglang had no choice but to follow. As he jogged along, he muttered, "I don't even know how to skip rubber bands!"
The two walked up to the booth and read the game rules. According to the rules, completing the required moves without making mistakes would earn coupons: one coupon for solo skipping and three coupons for pair skipping.
"Lang, let's play together! We can get three coupons!" Fan Yueming gently tugged at Gao Xinglang's hand, acting coquettishly like a little girl.
"I'll pass. What kind of men would skip rubber bands? That's embarrassing!" Gao Xinglang shook his head vigorously while waving his hands to refuse.
"Skipping rubber bands isn't like wearing a skirt—why should it be gender-specific?" Fan Yueming pointed to the crowd in the line and persuaded him softly, "Look, there are boys waiting in line too."
"Let them skip if they want. I'm not doing it anyway." Gao Xinglang remained firm in his stance. "At most, I'll go line up for the basketball game again to win you an extra coupon."
Upon hearing this, Fan Yueming felt a little annoyed, shook off Gao Xinglang's hand, and went to line up alone. Gao Xinglang stood beside the line, keeping Fan Yueming company. He tried his best to say something to cheer her up, but Fan Yueming ignored him completely. Feeling snubbed, Gao Xinglang had no choice but to silently follow the line as it moved forward.
The little girl seemed a little shy at first, but after a few seconds, she gathered her courage and stammered to Fan Yueming, "Sis—sorry, but later—can I—can I skip rubber bands with you?"
"Of course you can, little one." Fan Yueming agreed without hesitation, then asked kindly, "Did you come to the carnival alone? Where are your parents?"
"Mom went to the restroom." The little girl replied with a pure smile, "She'll be back soon."
Fan Yueming smiled back and said, "Alright, little one. Let's figure out how we should skip the rubber bands later..."
A few minutes later, it was Fan Yueming and the little girl's turn to skip rubber bands. They walked up to the rubber bands, exchanged a smile, nodded at each other, and then started skipping. Like two agile swallows, they darted nimbly between the two rubber bands while singing a nursery rhyme: "Fifteen, sixteen, seventy, eighteen and then twenty-one..."
The little girl's mother stood nearby, watching her daughter and Fan Yueming skip happily with a smile on her face.
Gao Xinglang also watched with great interest as Fan Yueming hopped around like a little girl. But as he watched, the smile on his face gradually faded. For some reason, seeing Fan Yueming and the little girl skipping rubber bands brought back memories of Guan Xuchen doing that with the girls when they were in the seventh grade. And Gao recalled things many years ago...
"Lang, Lang." At that moment, Fan Yueming walked over, waved her right hand in front of Gao Xinglang's face, and teased, "Did I skip so well that you spaced out?"
