"No. Why? How?" Oh god this cannot be happening! This is only like the worse news that I have ever received in my life. Okay, maybe that is an exaggeration. But this is close!
"Your grandmother needs a place to stay. Her whole house got flooded. I know it is going to be a tight squeeze with Zack here for the summer too but we can make it work. You will just have to learn to get along with her." My mum tells me with a sigh. Even she knew that her mother in law was difficult.
It's not that I don't love her. But my dad's mother can be very... insane? Okay that isn't the right word. She is very opinionated. She has her views of how the world should be and hates it when it's not.
"How long is she staying?" I ask the dreaded question.
                              "For most of the summer."
                              "WHAT?! The summer!" I whine.
"Come on, honey. It's not that bad." She lies.
"Great. There goes my wonderful summer." I mumble.
"Now get Zack and make yourselves useful by setting the table. Your grandmother will be here any minute from the airport." She informs me.
"What? Now? Could you not have told me in advance?"
She laughs. "If I had I knew you would complain and find a way out of her staying here."
"So how about, I don't find a way out of her staying here. Why can't I find a way for me not to stay here? I can stay at Ethan's! They have a guestroom. Maybe even Zack could come to and share a room with Ethan." I suggest.
Mum stops taking food out of the fridge to face me. "Of course not. Honey this is our last summer before you leave to college and I want to be able to spend time with you before you go. You will stay here, but unfortunately on the couch because she is taking your room." This just keeps getting better and better.
"Fine. But you owe me! Big time." I say before grabbing the plates to set the table and leaving the kitchen. "Zack!" I call out.
A minute later he turns up in the dining room. "Hey, what's up?"
"This is a disaster! Also pass the cutlery." I order him.
He passes me the knives and forks and grabs the glasses to place on the table. "What is a disaster? And why are we setting up an extra place?"
"My grandma is coming." I whine.
"So?" he looks at me confused.
"She is crazy! And she is staying here all summer." I tell him about the conversation I just had with my mum.
"Wow. How come I have never met her before?" he asks as we finish the table.
"She use to visit when I was younger. But stopped around the time I met you because it was too tiresome for her or some crap. She also really doesn't like my mum." I explain.
Grandma didn't use to mind mum that much until my mum got pregnant when she was only nineteen with me that is. Grandma claims that my mum ruined my dad's future. Dad goes to visit her or we would all go together every so often. So this was the first time she has visited in almost fifteen years. She also only met Violet once last summer.
                              "That sucks." Zack responds.
Just then I hear the front door open and my dad walks in carrying a large suitcase in. Then my grandma walks in behind him with a look of distaste.
"Has it always been so small?" Is the first thing out of her mouth.
No hello, nice to see you. No thank you for letting me stay here.
