"Hey, Greenie! Are you gonna help, or are you just going to stand there all day?"
The accent was unmistakable. You blinked, suddenly realizing that you had been staring intensely at your boyfriend as he stood overseeing the Bloodhouse construction. You pulled your hand away from your necklace that you had absentmindedly been fingering and tore your gaze away from Gally's attractive form, reluctantly coming back to earth to the present task at hand.
"Sorry, Newt," you said, grabbing another strand of wire and wrestling with a thick-leaved grapevine branch.
Those loopy, tangled vines were ridiculous. You didn't understand how Newt had the patience to deal with them. You watched from the corner of your eye as Newt turned his back towards you, kneeling down to uproot a weed that Zart had missed, and cautiously took the opportunity to glance towards the Bloodhouse once more.
You smiled as your eyes rested on Gally, and you watched him as he leaned against the crutch that Chuck had made for him, furrowing his eyebrows against the glare of the sun, and trying to direct the confused-looking Builders by calling out and making gestures towards them. Your smiled deepened. You could hardly wait until he was healthy and strong again so that he could show up the other Builders once more, like the Keeper he was.
Even though it had only been a few days since he had gotten over his fever and he was still very weak, he had been getting extremely agitated at the prospect of not being able to get back to work and show the other Gladers that he wasn't going soft. He had tried convincing Alby to let him start building again, but Alby was not going to have his Keeper of the Builders tax his strength and fall into relapse, because without Gally, the other Builders were pretty much helpless. So, Alby compromised and let him instruct from the sidelines, which Gally was not too happy about, but at least he was able to do something.
Gally turned and saw you staring and raised a hand. Even from the distance you caught a smile from him, and you happily waved back before he reluctantly turned his focus to the Builders once more.
"Gree-nie."
It was Newt. Again.
Busted.
You looked down at the wire in your fingers, trying to wrap it around the leafy vine, but you were having more difficulty than success. Suddenly there was a loud, familiar clanging sound, and you looked towards the kitchen to see Frypan beating a small, metal wash tub with a wooden spoon. Lunch. Yay.
You quickly shoved the wired together, twisting some leaves up in them as you did so, planning to follow Newt and Zart as they headed towards an already lengthening line of Gladers. As you finished up with the wire, Newt turned around and gestured towards the rest of the vine that was still unwired.
"Finish that," he said, then turned back and continued walking before you had the chance to argue.
Sighing heavily you picked up another long strand of silver wire and another handful of leaves, struggling to wrap the wire around them. You could hardly blame Newt. It was one of the three rules; everyone does their part, but it was hard to concentrate long enough to do so, especially when your crazy-attractive boyfriend was standing at the perfect viewing distance. You grimaced as a few leaves broke off in your hands. Feeling frustrated and a bit guilty, you tucked extra attached leaves around the broken stems, hiding them from view. It didn't look too bad, but knowing Newt, he would probably find out eventually.
"I saw that."
You jumped as arms hugged you from behind, and turned your head and bumped noses with Gally who had rested his chin on your shoulder.
