"Hey Gally!"
You looked up at a Glader's call to see Gally walking as best he could, and smiled to see Chuck's crutch underneath his arm. Even though he was getting stronger every day, he was still very weak from the fever, and you could see that, although he tried to hide it, the extra help of the crutch was necessary, at least of now.
You leaned the rake that you had been using against the wooden grapevine supports and a slow grin spread across your face as you stepped up to him.
"I'm so proud of you," you gushed.
"Huh," he rolled his eyes, but you saw a quick, fleeting smile before he looked away.
"No, but seriously, look at how happy you've made Chuck." Gally followed your gaze, glancing at Chuck's smiling face as he waved to you and Gally from across the Glade. "And me," you added, looking up at him with admiration.
Gally was stubborn and prideful when it came down to it, but there was also a buried element of compassion underneath his outer toughness, and that is what you loved about him. The kindness beneath his amazing physical and mental strength.
His green eyes left Chuck and rested on you, causing a slight quiver to run up the sides of your arms, and a warm feeling to enter your stomach. He saw the effect that his gaze had on you, and he grinned roguishly.
"So how's it going so far?" he asked, looking towards his crew of Builders gathered around the unrepaired Bloodhouse.
"I'd say that it's pretty much a total and complete disaster."
Gally snorted in disbelief at a Glader who was trying to lift a board up to another oblivious boy straddling the roof, then looked away, "I can't watch."
"Yeah, Newt put me to work in the gardens since the Builders weren't too keen on having my help, and I didn't want to get in the way of their-"
"Horrendous disorganization?" he offered.
"-efforts," you finished. "I was going to say efforts."
"Right."
"However, your wording is sadly accurate, I have to admit," you said, looking at the scrambling Gladers as they tried to catch a board sliding off of the Bloodhouse roof.
"Pathetic," said Gally dishearteningly.
"Yeah," you said, then smiled, "But it's nice to know that they can't get along without you."
You gazed at Gally as your words sank in, and he smiled at you, "True."
"Want some lunch?" you offered, "Frypan must be nearly done by now."
"Sure," he said, I'll get it."
"Sweet, Gally," you replied, "But I think I should."
"But-" he started.
"Not even an argument!" you called, turning towards the Kitchen.
"Fine! Whatever!" you heard him call from behind you in defeat as you continued walking. "Meet me in my hut, then!"
You turned around and smiled, then he stuck out his tongue and was off before you had a chance to retaliate. You quickened your pace.
~Time Lapse~
Expertly balancing two full plates of beans and a bit of precious meat in your hands, you made your way to Gally's hut. It was a sunny day, a nice change from the stormy weather the night before which had left puddles everywhere. The gardens were wrecked, and you were glad that Newt had assigned you to help clean up the broken grapevine branches among other things.
