You sighed for about the fifth time, looking longingly over at the dome hut made of tree branches and mud which was situated against one of the walls of the Maze. You'd been informed by Alby that it was the Council hut, where the Gladers got together to make decisions. Decisions about you this time, no doubt. Finally you could stand it no longer. You had to find out what they were saying!

Looking around to make sure that you weren't being watched, you slowly started walking nonchalantly in the direction of the hut, then suddenly you crouched down and ran. Ducking behind the walls of the hut, breathing heavily from your sprint as well as excitement from not being caught, you tried to slow your gasping enough to hear what was being said from the inside.

"...catastrophe!"

It was Gally's voice! A smile quickly spread across your face and you felt bubbly inside, but your smile began to fade as he went on...

"You honestly think that her coming here isn't a mistake? Well, it obviously is! We have never ever had a girl come up in that box before-"

"Just because it's never happened before doesn't mean that it's a bad thing, Gally."

The thick, British accent confirmed that it was Newt who was sticking up for you.

"Oh yeah?" you heard Gally answer, "It's obviously a mistake to me."

You shifted position, finding a small space between the branch walls to look through, and even though your view was just a slit, it was better than nothing.

"Why?" asked Newt, "What's so bad about it?"

"Yeah," said a boy whose name you did not know, "If you ask me, we could use a change of scenery."

Some of the other boys' voices clamored in agreement in such a way that made you slightly uneasy.

"What's so bad about it?" asked Gally, you could see his eyebrows raised through your small view, "Well that, for one."

There was a somewhat uncomfortable silence from the other Gladers as Gally let the words sink before he continued.

"Now, Alby, you can't tell me that her-being a girl-isn't going to cause complications among us."

Alby shifted his weight and looked at Newt.

"Come on, tell me I'm right. And where's she going to sleep, huh? Have you thought about that?"

More uncomfortable silence.

"Well what do you propose we do?" asked Newt.

Gally shrugged, "All I know, is that for as long as she's here, things are going to keep getting worse. Trust me."

His words hit like blows to your stomach. You couldn't believe that no one was standing up for you! You were especially mad that it was Gally who was saying these things. That he didn't want you to stay. That he did want you...

Suddenly your half-asleep foot crumpled from the pressure that you were exerting upon it, and you scrambled to catch yourself, accidentally knocking against the branch walls and causing one to snap with the sound of a nuclear bomb.

There was a dreadful silence and you strained your ears, hoping violently that you weren't discovered and thrown into the Maze that second.

Finally you dared to breathe again as Alby spoke, breaking the silence, "It's almost dark, the Doors will close soon. We will talk about this more tomorrow, I'm not letting any Greenie-girl or not-go without a bonfire on their first night. These 'issues'," he said, choosing the word carefully, "are minor complications. As for where she'll sleep, the Lookout Tower for now." To Gally's protest he addd, "No more discussion until tomorrow, let's go."

You backed away from the hut as quickly as possible as the boys started to file out. You saw Gally, and your heart leapt. Sure, you weren't exactly happy with him at the moment, but he was still hot. His angry expression turned into a scowl as your eyes met, and he walked briskly away.

Your heart sank, then Alby caught your eye and came up to you.

"Sorry that took so long, Greenie," he said cheerily. "You weren't too bored, were you?"

You forced a sort of smile, then suddenly jumped and whirled around, eyes wide.

"Wh-what was that?!" you asked, shakily.

"That..." said Alby slowly, the horridly loud sound still echoing around the Glade, "was a Griever. But don't worry," he added, "You're safe inside these walls."

You glanced towards the ominous-looking Doors.

There was a loud, deep, horn-like blast that resonated around the entire Glade causing the ground to tremble. Then, slowly, you watched as the massive Doors shuttered slightly and slowly began to move closer and closer together, until they touched, sealing off the passageway into the Maze.

"Now, come on," said Alby with a reassuring smile. "The surprise awaits!"
