"The Doors will open soon, Y/N, don't worry!"
You felt Chuck's hand rest hesitantly on your shoulder as he tried to make you feel better, but you knew that nothing would. You were numb all over. As much as you willed those Doors to open, there was another part of you that wanted them to remain shut, not wanting to face the sight you knew that you might see. You blamed yourself for what happened with Gally, knowing that you should have seen the signs! Now that you thought about it, it was so obvious! But that wouldn't bring Gally back. And when those Doors opened you knew that no matter what you saw on the other side of them, it would be your fault as well.
Gladers talked softly amongst themselves. Time seemed to drag by, and the more that you waited, the more you wondered whether time was actually moving forward or not. Suddenly the ground beneath you began to shake catching your attention, and the attention of the other boys. As you quickly stood to your feet, the Doors gave a low, rumbling shudder and then slowly began to move.
It was as if the entire Glade held its breath as those monstrous Doors slid apart. You stood very still, half of you frozen in prayerful anticipation, the other half of you paralyzed with fear. After what seemed like an eternity, the Doors finally parted enough to show a crumpled, unmoving figure lying on the hard, cold, Maze floor.
"Gally!" you shrieked, unable to contain his name as it burst from your mouth.
As if your voice had acted as some sort of spell-breaker, Alby motioned to a couple of Baggers, and together they quickly ran into the Maze, kneeling by Gally's still form. You bit your lip, trembling uncontrollably, fighting to hold back the flood of emotions that threatened to destroy you.
Was he...? Was he...!?
"He looks alright," you heard Alby call, and fell to your knees, watching as the Baggers, along with Alby's help, lifted Gally's limp form off of the concrete, carrying him back to the grass.
"Alright, stand back! Everybody, stand back! Move! Give him some space, now!" commanded Alby waving his arms to make his point.
You stared down at Gally's motionless form, still visibly trembling, holding your breath, hoping...hoping...
"Is he dead?" you heard one boy ask in a whisper.
Suddenly you thought that you caught a slight flicker of Gally's eyes.
"Gally, Gally!" you called in desperation, staring into his face.
You gasped as Gally moved his head slightly, then his eyelids slowly fluttered open. He stared blankly for a moment, then his eyebrows very slowly began to sink downward in mounting confusion as he looked around at the circle of crowding of boys.
"What..."
"Gally!" you sobbed, "Are you alright?"
Gally's eyes skimmed across your face, confusion still written in his features, then he looked up at the other boys.
"Where am I?" he asked, his voice deep and husky.
"You're in the Glade, Gally," Alby said forcefully. "Everything is all right now. Do you feel okay? Do you require Medjack assistance?"
"The..." Gally's sat up slowly, his eyes flicking back and forth, his eyebrows furrowing deeper, as if trying to interpret what Alby had just said.
"Gally," said Alby.
An unsettling feeling flickered inside of you from the way Alby had said Gally's name, and the uneasy feeling began to grow with each second that you looked at Gally's confused, unsure face.
His shoulders began to rise and fall as his breath grew deeper and more rapid.
"Gally?" Alby said again, a bit louder this time.
Gally stared with narrowed eyes at the ground, lips slightly moving, then he seemed to realize that Alby was talking to him, and he looked up, still with the unsure and increasingly-suspicious look in his eyes. As if...as if he didn't....
"Gally!" you said before even realizing that you had spoken.
At the sound of your voice, he glanced up at you for a moment, quickly looking your face up and down, before returning his attention to Alby.
The fear that had begun to rise in the pit of your stomach suddenly grew more intense, your breath quickened, and you struggled to try to calm the sudden rise of panic. "Gally!"
His gaze returned to you, this time with a stare of slight annoyance, and the look in his eyes made the blood drain from your face. They were void of any loving emotion or sentiment, and along with being confused, they were cold, and hard, and unfeeling, and the truth hit you like a sledgehammer. You trembled and began to shake your head slowly, unwilling to accept the impossible fact.
The look on your face must have alarmed Gally, for he looked around at the faces of the other boys wildly. "Who are you? Why am I here? What's going on?"
As Gally spoke in an uneasy and somewhat frightened tone, the rest of the Gladers slowly began to realize what you already knew.
Gally had lost his memory.
Again.
