You kept your eyes closed, already knowing that it was just before dawn. Before the Runners ran into the Maze. Before Gally ran with them into the Maze. An uncontrolled feeling of tension and worry had settled over you ever since Alby had agreed to make Gally a Runner. A feeling that you could not shake, and a feeling that grew worse each time you watched him disappear through those Doors. Nothing much had changed between you and Gally over the past couple of days. You didn't have much time to talk to him now that he was gone pretty much all day with Minho and Thomas out in the Maze, and when you tried talking to him, he would give you that look. The same look that he used to give you when you first came up in the Box, before you kissed him.
You turned onto your back, staring up at the ceiling. Before you kissed him. That was when everything changed between the two of you. Still to this day you didn't know what prompted you to go up to his harsh, stern countenance and press your lips into his, but you had. You had just been so unexplainably drawn to him. Maybe it was because he was so tough. So commanding and forceful. So unlike any of the other boys in the Glade. So perfectly imposing and strong, physically and mentally. Besides, he was attractive with those brilliant green eyes, cute nose, adorable smile, and the most amazing eyebrows you could ever remember seeing.
But that kiss. That one kiss changed everything. Maybe...
You rolled onto your side.
Maybe to make Gally remember, you had to kiss him! It was worth a shot, right? All you had to do was work up enough courage to do so. Maybe this would actually work, and then you could have your Gally back! And you wouldn't have to be worried to death about him going into the Maze because he wouldn't be going into the Maze anymore! He would return to his rightful place as Keeper of the Builders once more, and Keeper of you heart. Why hadn't you thought about this before?!
You sat up, now completely and fully determined. You would kiss him now, right now, before he had time to meet up with Thomas and Minho. This might actually work! No. It would work! You were sure this time!
~Time Lapse~
Taking a deep breath, you stepped up to his door and knocked. You stood there, listening, but not hearing a sound. You knocked again, a bit louder this time.
"Gally?" you asked, trying the handle.
To your surprise, the door swung open easily, and you stepped inside. At first glance you could tell that Gally wasn't there; however, you were shocked at the sight that you did see. The boxes that had been tipped or upside down around the room were now in a perfectly straight stack in the corner. You took a hesitant step forward, glancing around. The random myriad of clothing that had been scattered and thrown everywhere were now folded in the crates, smoothed straight without a wrinkle or a bunch anywhere.
His room wasn't just tidy, it was uncomfortably clean. Immaculate, down to the last detail. A soft shiver ran down your spine as you turned around on the empty floor, still feeling rather shocked and a bit disturbed. You heard the scuff of boots and turned to see Gally standing in the doorway, staring at you.
The resolve that you had determinedly built up to kiss him just moments before slowly began to shrink away as he continued to stare at you as if wondering what in the world you were doing standing in his hut. You wanted to explain, but you found that you couldn't even open your mouth, let alone form words. You swallowed, willing yourself to leave but knowing that your feet were stuck to the ground.
Then Gally walked through the door slowly, coming closer and closer to you with each step, face expression rugged, eyes locked with yours. He continued to walk forward until he stood just in front of you, still staring into your eyes with the same apprehensive but faintly interested expression. You quivered slightly, frozen in place, looking up at him. Then you held your breath as he put out his hand, reaching behind you, and you felt your eyelids fall shut. There was a soft grating sound, and you opened your eyes as he slid the Runner's vest from off of the crate behind you. Dismayed, you released the breath that you had been holding, realizing that you should have known him better rather than getting tangled up in your feelings.
