Chapter 28

It had been a week since Steve discovered that Tiana's mom was behind the attack. He hadn't told Tiana yet. He didn't know how to tell her. It hurt not being able to tell her the truth because she deserved the truth. He didn't want to break her heart. How could he tell her that her mother was behind the attacks? He still didn't know the reason why. Keeping the secret was going to be harder than he thought it would be.

Steve was struggling to find a reason for why her mother wanted to harm her. It didn't make sense. Did her mother hate her that much after father died? It wasn't possible. Her mother will always love Tiana. Maybe he was wrong? Maybe it wasn't her mother that tried to kill her. Oh, how he hoped to be wrong. Steve couldn't keep the secret to himself anymore. He had to tell somebody.

"That can't be true!" Nat exclaimed, getting comfortable on the couch. "That's what I thought too but all the evidence is pointing to her." Steve explained. "Why would she harm her own daughter?" Bucky asked. "That's the one thing I can't figure out." Steve sighed. They hear Tiana's footsteps from the kitchen. "Just don't tell her anything. I haven't told her yet." Steve said quickly. "Our lips are sealed." Nat said.

"I have bad news, the dessert I tried to make didn't turn out so well. Now we don't have a desert." Tiana said, sulking. "I can go to the store and get us some ice cream." Steve said, trying to cheer her up. "Yeah, that would be great!" She smiled. "I'll go with you." Bucky said as they walked out. "We'll be back soon. Love you." Steve said, giving her a quick kiss. "Love you, too." She smiled.

"How are you holding up?" Nat asked, as Tiana sat down next to her. "Okay, I guess. Still processing what happened. I still can't believe she's gone." Tiana said, burying her face in her hands. "I'm sorry." Nat said, rubbing her back gently. "It's okay. I'll be okay. I just find it unfair. All she was trying to do was help me. She wanted to change. It's really not fair." Tiana said, tearfully.

"You know what will take your mind off things?" Nat grinned. "What?" Tiana asked, curiously. "Wedding planning." Nat smiled. "Oh, my word. So much has happened recently that I almost forgot about the wedding." Tiana gasped. "Steve needs to join us. He said he wanted to be part of the whole process. Also, he thought it was a distraction from the whole work situation." Tiana added. "Of course. We can't do wedding planning without the groom." Nat said. "I'm so excited about the wedding planning. It's going to be so much fun." Tiana squealed with excitement.

Fifteen minutes later, Steve and Bucky arrived. They bought tubs of Ben n' Jerry's Cookie dough ice cream. Tiana's eyes widened in surprise! "Omg! I can't believe you found this flavour! I've been looking for this forever. Thanks, babe." She said, throwing her arms around Steve. "I knew you would love this." Steve grinned, kissing the top of her head.

Minutes later Tiana devoured the tub of ice cream, surprising everyone in the room. She found them staring at her. "What? I just really love cookie dough ice cream, okay." She explained as scooped up the last bit of ice cream. "Was this a pregnancy craving?" Steve asked. "I think it was." Tiana said, casually.

"Steve, Tiana and I decided that we will get started on the wedding planning this week. She has also informed me that you want to be involved as much as possible. Where should we start? Nat asked.

"Maybe you two can get started without me. I will catch up next week. There's just a lot going on at work." Steve sighed, unable to meet Tiana's eyes. "Steve, this was your idea. You're the one who suggested we should do this together. We haven't even started and you're already not involved?" Tiana said, sharply. "I know and I'm sorry for bailing out but I promise it's only for this week. I will be more involved next week, I promise." He apologised. Tiana could see he meant what he said, He wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't important. She trusted him.
