Though the Shadow was not with the group of people who wanted to resurrect Ganondorf, he posed a threat. Even he needed to be convinced.
They still had more people to worry about working against them. However, this time, they needed to do a little investigating to uncover them. So, they thought of going in disguise. The princess was holding a ball for all of Hyrule to attend, and also to see if they could uncover the group of traitors. However, it wasn't easy to disguise Link. The Hero of Hyrule is not someone people don't recognize. Y/n also couldn't be disguised, as her time with the Hero was known, and the two have been linked to each other ever since.
So what could be done? A fake falling out.
To begin, Link and Y/n weren't seen together anymore. Anytime they would 'accidentally' run into each other, they would scoff and give each other dirty looks. Y/n had begun to either leave conversations that brought up Link or comment on how irritating he was and how she was glad she never had to speak with him again.
"Ugh, must we speak of the 'Hero of Twilight'?" She'd say with disdain that she put so much effort into sounding convincing. "You may admire him and revere him as your hero, but he's most certainly not my hero."
Oh, but he most certainly was.
It wasn't difficult to act upset with Link; she'd had plenty of practice. Link, however, wasn't as keen on the act. Acting as if he detested her hurt him; she was his best friend, and he adored her. At the end of the day, he'd go to the Castle and sleep there while Y/n was back at her own home. All he wanted was to be with her when the day was done, but they couldn't risk someone finding out. Being sloppy wasn't something that could happen.
Y/n had gone back to her life as it was before, working at the shop and sleeping there. It was a bit funny, living her life as if Link didn't exist to her. She now knew what a kind, sweet soul he was, and she missed his encouraging words, however rare they were now after all the incidents. His smile, though, she missed the most. Whenever she saw it, it was like a warm feeling that encased her. Suddenly, whatever mattered, whatever bothered her, didn't matter anymore.
Even with distractions like this, something always ate away at her.
Her sword and the note left to her on it.
'You are not worthy.'
It sent a sick feeling into her stomach to think of it. How could her family have acquired a sword so powerful? One that held so much meaning? And how would she ever figure out what it meant?
She groaned and set her head down on the counter in her shop. She turned her head to gaze at her sword leaning against the wall. It had been a while since the incident at Kakariko, but it still set her on edge to think about the whole thing.
That strange dust that surrounded the sword had vanished with the wind, but she had an odd feeling that it was following her.
Flying around behind her, but when she turned, it hid within the ground or the trees. She felt like she was being watched, more than she usually did, at least. How could she know for certain? She wanted a solution; she hated living in a constant state of fear.
She, however, was leaving that all to the side so she could focus on her current objective.
Finding these traitors.
With everyone under the impression that the two no longer had any relationship or friendship, the trap was set. To further convince everyone, Y/n had to speak to the biggest gossip, talking about how she not only hated Link but wanted to get some kind of revenge on him. Though Link knew it was a farce, he couldn't help feeling a twinge of hurt in his heart at the thought of Y/n hating him so. Seeing everything play out, not being able to be around her, not being able to speak to her, hearing how she didn't like him, it hurt. He had lived this nightmare before. He was lucky she had finally recovered her memory. He didn't know what he would've done if she hadn't.
