That morning, Kakariko was silent. Y/n and Link lay in the same bed, their bodies entangled with one another as they slept peacefully. Light poured through the window, but it didn't stir the two. Their comfort in one another's arms was too great to give in to waking up. In sleep, she didn't feel the pain. There were no sharp bursts of agony when Link held her close; there was only a warm feeling like the sun on her face.

However, peace such as this is always short-lived. A commotion outside startled the two awake. Link was fast; he was on his feet and his hand on his sword as Y/n threw herself off the bed to look out the window carefully.

A group of residents was circling something in the middle of the road, and Renado was approaching. Luda followed him closely as he kept a protective arm around her. "Link, we should go see." He nodded, and they quickly left, leaving their belongings. They were not important right now; whatever had happened took priority.

"Renado, what is it?" Y/n called out as they drew closer. Luda ran to her and clutched her arm, her eyes watery. "I'm not sure." She comforted Luda by pulling her close and rubbing her back as she assured her they would fix whatever it was.

In the middle of the gathered circle, there was a ring of black dust. Link quickly recognized it, but it wasn't the dust that set them on edge. It was what it was placed around.

Y/n's sword.

She saw it standing; it was stabbed deep into the ground, and one of the cloaks hung on it. There was a piece of parchment with writing stuck to it. Y/n left Luda with Shad as she went to walk toward her sword, but Link stopped her. "No one has been able to get near it. The dust acts as a shield." Renado lifted his hand, and the dust shot up with a barrier. The sword looked as if it were shrouded in darkness. When his hand lowered, the dust did as well. Link approached, and the same thing occurred; however, this time, the dust seemed more erratic. It shot up, but rather than a still barrier, the dust began to move. It swirled like a cyclone around the sword, clockwise. Link knew he couldn't get past it; he would get injured doing so.

He clenched his jaw in anger and backed up, watching the dust freeze. It didn't lower itself but rather began to move again. He raised a brow but, out of the corner of his eye, watched Y/n near it. Everyone backed up to give her space.

The dust twisted, this time counterclockwise. It was slow, almost gentle, like a light breeze in the leaves. As she grew closer, it sped up. There was a sound, like a lock turning, when the dust reached its peak, and then it fell to the ground. She stopped right in front of it and hovered her hand over the space. It didn't move.

'Take it.' A whisper as the wind began to howl around them, taking the dust with it. She removed the note and cloak from her sword, handing them to Link. She grasped the hilt of the sword, a smile forming on her lips. She yanked it from the ground and watched the blade gleam in the sunlight. A sigh of relief left her when she found it was left in its original state. "Y/n." Link broke through her mind and handed her the note.

'The sword of potential, belonging to the Hero's companion.
The sword of greatness, in the hands of a frail woman.
The sword of darkness, held by one who walks in the light.

The Sword of the Veil, held by you.

You are not worthy.'

"Link, we need to leave. Now."

Link ran back to grab their things. "Y/n. This blade has been in your family for years. If the note is telling the truth of this blade's name, how would your family even acquire such a thing?" Shad asked, half out of worry and half out of curiosity. "I'm not sure. That's what I need to go find out."
