It was hard to tell with the heavy raindrops and strong wind, but I could have sworn I heard a small whirring sound. Maybe I was just hearing things or my mind playing tricks on me. I chose to ignore it as I kept driving down the wet street at 10 miles an hour. Had I known there was going to be a freaking hurricane (not really but considering the amount of rain, it might as well be one) tonight in Beacon Hills, I would have stayed home in my sweats, eat junk food, while having a marathon on Netflix. I should probably get into the habit of watching the news report or at least I could have added a weather app on my phone to avoid situations like this.
Suddenly, and unexpectedly, my car made a bunch of weird noises. It started rumbling, then it began to sputter, it whined next, and ended with a sizzling sound as the hot smoke from underneath the hood collided with the cold rain.
"Nooooo!" The car came to a complete stop and broke down. "Don't do this to me now." I turned the key in the ignition, hoping it would start again, but it didn't. "What the hell is wrong with you?!" I yelled at my car, as if it had a mind of its own and could respond back. But, seriously, what was my car thinking just giving out like that?
I look at my dashboard and no lights are blinking or signaling what could possibly be wrong with my car. "You're useless," I mumble at the dashboard.
I pulled the cap from my hoodie forward and tucked my hair in to prevent it from getting drenched in the rain. I quickly jumped out of the car, stepping into a puddle with the water reaching a little higher than my ankles. "Just freaking great!"
I waddle my soaked and wet feet toward the hood of my car and popped the hood. I began to scan the car and noticed I was wasting my time because I didn't know anything about cars, their parts, and how they function. I was just an idiot standing in the middle of the storm, getting soaked, with the hood up looking perplexed. Not exactly the night I had in mind.
A strong gush of wind blew, knocking down my hoodie, and getting my hair drenched. FML, I mentally cursed myself as I closed the hood and walked back into my car.
My hand trembled as I reached for my phone from my purse. I pressed my thumb on the main button and spoke after a little beep. "Call Boyfriend." My teeth chattered.
"Calling Boyfriend," Siri spoke back. I put the speaker on as soon as I heard the first ring to avoid getting water on my phone from my soaked hair, ear, and hoodie. By the third ring, I heard the similar voice of my boyfriend through the speaker. "What's up, babe?"
"Gar-re-tt" My voice stuttered.
"What's wrong?" Although I can't see it, I'm pretty sure his eyebrows are furrowed forward, causing crease lines across his forehead and his bottom lip slightly pouting forward. I've always thought he looked so cute worried. "Are you okay?" His voice sounded panicky.
"Fine," I shuttered again. Damn it. Get it together. "Car broke down," I managed to say with out stuttering, but my teeth began to chatter as I paused, trying to form my next sentence, but all I could muster was, "Got wet. Rain cold."
"Where are you?" I heard shuffling in the background, probably finding his boots. "I'm coming to get you."
"Route 459," I answered as I began to hug myself, trying to keep myself warm. "Before the lake."
"I'm on my way, babe." The sound of Garrett's keys jingled through the phone and a door opening.
"Ummkay," I hummed. "Be careful."
After about 20 minutes, I hopped out of my car as soon as I saw the highlights of Garrett's black Escalade, forgetting my things in the car as I slammed the door shut. I turned around to see Garrett getting out of his car and running towards me.
"What the hell are you doing?!" I shouted. "You're going to get wet and sick, too!"
"I don't care," he said panting. He placed his arms firmly on my waist. I looked down to see them snake around my waist and pulling me to his chest. "What are you doing?" I looked up at him, confused. My eyelids blinked profusely as the raindrops hit my face while locking my eyes with his sapphire irises.
Taking me by surprise, he lifted me up and swung me around, making a small shriek leaving my mouth as he laughed. I wrapped my arms around him, laughing along with him. And there we were, two idiots in love in the middle of the storm, probably catching pneumonia, and we didn't give a damn.
He put me down, his arms still wrapped firmly at the small of my back, pushing me towards him. "I've always wanted to do this," he leaned in and pressed his lips against mine. He lips were gentle but very passionate. My hand slipped into his wet hair, deepening the kiss. The warmth of his lips spread all the way down to my toes, making me forget about the pouring cold rain.
He pulled back, his hot breath turning into a small white smoke of puff in the cold rain, "let's get you warmed up." He pulled my hand and led the way back to the driver's side of his Escalade. I crossed over to the passenger side, and he followed behind, closing the door shut. He placed his hands at the top of my shoulders and ran them up and down my arms, trying to keep me warm. I rubbed my hands together and blew my hot breath against them. Garrett covered my hands in his and pressed them against his lips, blowing more hot air. "Are you getting somewhat warmer?"
I felt the warmth slowly spreading throughout my body. "A little bit."
He pulled a bag from the backseat. "I brought you some clothes to change into." He unzipped the duffle bag and pulled out his lacrosse hoodie and some sweats. "The storm is only getting worse, I'd figured some dry clothes would keep us warm stuck in here."
"Oh thank god!" I pulled him in for a quick kiss. "You're so smart and thoughtful! I love you, baby!" The words rushed out of my mouth so quickly, I didn't even realize I said it. We had never said the L word before. We've been dating for 8 months and I've known since the first time I laid my eyes on him, I was in love with him, but I wasn't sure if he felt that way about me, and if he did, I wanted him to say it first.
I felt my eyes widened at the sudden realization. "I'm sorry, I didn't-"
"You didn't mean it?" Garrett's face faltered as his bottom lip slightly slipped forward.
I shook my head repeatedly. "No, no, no, no, baby," I rushed out. "Look at me," I lifted his chin with my finger and cupped his cheeks as soon as his eyes locked with mine. "I meant it but I wasn't sure if you loved me too or if I said it too soon."
"Babe, of course, I love you, I have from the moment I first saw you," Garrett leaned his forehead as his cold nose brushed against mine. "I love you."
A smile spread across my face before my lips met his. "I love you, too." I grabbed the clothes from his hands, crossed over the back seat and quickly changed. "Do you want to switch places so you can change?" I tried to dry my wet hair with my drenched hoodie.
"I'm good babe," Garrett's head pulled through his favorite MLB hoodie. I ruffled his damped hair and pushed it away from his face. "Wanna cuddle?"
Garrett lips formed into a grin. "I'll recline the seats back so we can lay down in the back."
I hopped back upfront while Garrett pushed the seats down flat for us to lie down in. He patted the flat surface, motioning me to climb back. I snuggled against Garrett with my face at the cook of his neck and slung my arm around his torso. He slowly and repeatedly ran his fingers through my hair. It was so soothing and comforting, I didn't want him to ever stop.
"You look so good in my lacrosse hoodie, babe." He kissed my forehead. "I want you to keep it."
"Really?" I whispered into his neck and began giving him little butterfly kisses, making Garrett hummed in response. My hand slid up to the nape of his neck and pulled him down for a passionate and heated kiss, until my lungs were begging for air.
"I love you, baby." I reassumed my previous position with my face into his neck, taking in this scent, as his hand draped over my torso, pulling me closer to his chest. "I love you too, babe." That was the last thing I remembered, as we feel asleep in each other's arms with the sound of rain hitting against the windows.
