You groaned in front of your locker after witnessing another winter formal grand proposal in the hallway that involved balloons, streamers, and glitter. After seeing an organized flash mob that involved the football team in the quad for the head cheerleader during lunch, you were ready to snap if you saw one more grand gesture. You wanted to scream so badly but that would set off certain people. Of course, it would catch everyone's attention but only a handful would find it as a warning, a trouble of some sort, or a death warning.
The problem wasn't the general idea of winter formal. You wanted to go. You wanted to be asked in a special way and get dressed up in a dress you'd only wear one night. You wanted to keep the corsage in a box of memories in the back of your closet, create memories with your friends, and capture them in photos you'd keep forever. You wanted to dance the night the away under the stars with the boy you loved. That was the problem. The one person you wanted to ask you to winter formal and go with is the one guy you're not allowed to go near, Garrett.
"Guess who just got asked to Winter Formal?!" Kira cheerfully asked with a handful of pink and white balloons in her hand, and a picture perfect smile on her pretty face. That's it! You thought to yourself. Inside your locker you grabbed a pencil from your magnetic pencil holder, and stabbed a balloon, making a loud pop noise.
"Bite me!" You said angrily to Kira and walked away.
Garrett was a touchy topic with the pack. No one knew how you felt about him. You two were chemistry lab partners. The kind of lab partners teachers regret putting together after realizing how loud the pair was, as they always laughed, joked, smiled, and flirted between the eyes. Except nothing more happened, or rather nothing more could happen between the two of you. Garrett was an assassin, who kills supernatural creatures, and sooner or later he'll go after Scott's pack, a pack you were a part of.
After lashing out on Kira, you decided to skip your last class, chemistry. You were tired of all the winter formal talk and the last thing you wanted was the constant reminder of not getting to share at least one dance with the boy sitting next to you.
You walked right by the chemistry classroom door, down the hallway, and bumped into someone before reaching the double doors that led to the parking lot. The clash knocked down your school bag and papers flew everywhere. You sighed in frustration and kneeled down to pick up your school stuff without looking at the klutz that walked into you.
"Whoa! I didn't see you, Y/N. Where are you off in such a hurry?" You recognized the voice, making your heart skip a beat. You looked up to see your favorite pair of blue eyes. "Chemistry is that way," he gestured with his index finger.
"I'm skipping chemistry," you stood up and draped your book bag over your shoulder.
"Oh, okay. Can I skip with you?" He asked.
There was nothing more you wanted than to spend time with him outside of school, but you couldn't do that. It was against the rules. So you did what you did best. You lied. "I actually don't feel so well and I'm headed home to sleep it off. I'll copy your notes and get the homework from you tomorrow."
It was hard to read his mixed facial expression as his eyebrows furrowed. You couldn't tell if he was wounded because maybe he knew you were lying or bummed you said no.
From a distance you saw Scott and Stiles across the hallway, eyeing intensely what's happening between you and Garrett. You had no doubt Scott was listening to your conversation with Garrett. You turned your eyes back to Garrett. "I'll see you later."
You parked your car in your driveway, but left your bag and books in the front seat. You locked your car, and headed towards the trail that led to the woods from your backyard. You needed some space from everything and everyone. You needed to let everything out. Your emotions were building up and soon they would get the best of you. You were just about to scream bloody murder when you heard a twig snapped close by. Suddenly you were aware someone was with you. You scanned every inch of the woods and wondered who had followed you.
Seconds later, you saw him. The boy with the dirty blonde hair and eyes as blue as the sky, walking out from behind a tree. A wave of fear washed over you. You didn't know why he was here or why he followed you. Was he here to kill you and claim his cash prize? You were ready to send out a signal to Scott and the rest of the pack if you needed to.
"What are you doing here, Garrett?" You asked nervously, as you fumbled with your fingers, not leaving your eyes off him.
"Why did you lie to me?"
You didn't know exactly which lie he was referring to. "I have a headache and I needed some fresh air." Another lie.
"I thought we were close enough for you to be able to talk to me and tell the truth," he took one step forward, closing in the distance between the two of you.
You took one step back. "We are... I mean, no." You shook your head. "We're not. We're just lab partners."
Garrett took another step closer, shaking his head in disagreement with your words.
"We can't be more than that," you whispered.
"I know."
"No, you don't understand," your voice wavered.
"Yes I do. I understand because I know," he took a few steps closer. "I've known for a while, Y/N. Before Violet..." He cleared his throat and continued. "She left the third part of the list in my bag, and I noticed your name just above Liam's. I don't know what you are, but given your price I'm guessing you're something important and powerful; but I've known for weeks."
"Why didn't you say anything?" You hesitated before asking the next terrifying question. You swallowed, "Why haven't you killed me yet?"
"Because you're worth more than a price and I'd like to see you every day and not just look back on the memories of our days in chemistry class," he said as closed the distance, only inches away from your face. "I like you and if that means not killing and hunting you, Scott's pack or any other supernatural, then so be it. I rather have you than nothing at all."
"Garrett. It's easier said than done." Your eyes locked with his.
He placed his hand around your waist, which sent a shiver up your spine as his thumb touched your skin between your jeans and shirt. While his other hand reached for your cheek. "I'll do whatever it takes for you to trust me. For Scott to trust me, and the rest of his pack. I'll help in any way I can even if he wants me to give him the names of the other assassins I know of."
You held your breath. Was he serious? Assassins could go after him for betraying them for a girl, who happened to be on the dead pool list. Was he willing to risk his life for you?
He looked into your eyes, reading the worry that ran through your mind. He rested his forehead against yours, and whispered in front of your lips, "because I love you and I'd like to take you to senior prom. I want to see you in the stands cheering for me at every game. I want to take random road trips with you and drive wherever the road leads us without a map. I'd like to walk down the halls holding your hand..." His fingers slid in between the spaces of your fingers, and intertwined his fingers with yours. "But first, I'd like to dance the night away with you at winter formal."
Your heart was racing with every word he said, the electric igniting throughout your body with every touch, making the butterflies in your stomach fluttering like crazy. You couldn't help but smile as you thought to yourself, there it is. Your grand winter formal proposal from the boy you loved and it was far more perfect than a flash mob, colorful balloons, and sparkly glitter.
Garrett leaned in and pressed his lips softly against yours. He was about to pull away, but instead you slid your hand into his hair, deepening the kiss. You felt a smile forming on lips as you wrap your arms around his neck, slightly pushing him closer to you. He pushed back a little with a huge grin on his face.
"So what exactly are you?" His arms now tightly wrapped around at your wrist.
"Banshee."
"Oh really? I don't take you for a screamer." He teased.
"Wanna hear me scream?" You teased back before kissing him again.
