Slight trigger warning of stalking in this oneshot.

...................................

It started like any other semester, knuckling down dipping between library, study groups and late runs to coffee shops to stave off a weary mind. It becomes a routine that a uni students body accustoms to while factoring in social life.

The lecture hall smelled faintly of damp coats and burnt coffee. Yeji sat halfway up, laptop open but untouched, watching Y/n two rows ahead.

They weren't close. Not really. They shared notes sometimes, had partnered on a sociology project last term, exchanged the occasional "How'd you find that reading?" text.

Y/n lived in a different orbit of flatmates, parties, a constant stream of people Yeji never quite met and yet, here she was, watching her.

Because of the diary.

Yeji hadn't meant to find it, that was the thing that made it worse. It had been left half tucked under a pile of notebooks in the library, at the desk opposite hers.

She hadn't even realised it wasn't hers until she'd already opened it. Just a glance, she told herself.

But then she saw her own name.

Not just her name. Y/n's too.

Pages of it. Dates. Times. Observations written in looping, careful handwriting. What Y/n wore. Who she talked to. When she laughed. When she left early. When she stayed late.

And woven through it all. Hope. Assumption. Certainty.

"She looked at me today for longer than usual. I think she's starting to realise."

Yeji had closed it so fast she nearly knocked her coffee over, placing it back exactly where she found it.

And then she saw who came back for it.

-
Y/n turned slightly in her seat, brushing wavy hair behind her ear. She looked tired, eyes heavy. Yeji frowned. That wasn't unusual after a party, but still.

After a party. That was a couple of days ago?

Yejis stomach tightened, she'd heard about it in passing. Y/n mentioning "This girl from one of my classes." she'd been talking to. Yeji hadn't thought twice.

Until now.

Until the diary.

Until the name on the front page: Chaeyoung.

Yeji hadn't known Chaeyoung well, but she recognised her. Same course, was quiet. Always sitting just a bit too still, like she was trying not to take up space. Except the diary didn't feel small at all. It felt consuming.

"Hey." Y/n said after the lecture, falling into step beside her like it was the most natural thing in the world. "Did you get that last bit about the case study?"

Yeji blinked, dragged back. "Uh-yeah. I can send you my notes."

"Lifesaver." Y/n smiled, easy, warm the apple of her cheeks rising. Then hesitated. "You okay? You look... intense."

Yeji almost laughed. Intense. "I need to ask you something." she said, lowering her voice. "About that girl you mentioned. From the party?"

Y/n's expression shifted, subtle, but there. "Chae?"
Yeji nodded her cotton candy pink bob moving with the motion.

Y/n exhaled through her nose, glancing around before leaning closer. "Why?"

Yeji's throat tightened. Say it carefully. Don't sound insane. "Do you... know her well?"
