Before I met Lennox, I was convinced that I was going to end up alone in life. I was going to grow old with fifteen cats in a faraway place. I never had any sort of romantic encounters in high school. The fact alone gave me so many nicknames. I was called 'virginal nun' , 'prude' and much more through out my high school years. It only got worse when it came to Senior year when practically everyone would have had their first experience in almost....everything.I did not fit into any of the cliques. I wasn't a nerd nor a band geek or a technology geek or a prep or a hipster or a cheerleader for that matter. My lunches were spent in the library where a couple of nerds used to hang out. On the other hand, my older adoptive brother was the popular QB with a cheerleader of a girlfriend. Yes, it was cliché.
Lance was three years older to me and I was only a freshman when he was already in his Senior year living life to the fullest. In that one year we shared, he made sure that every guy steered clear of me. That's why I graduated high school with no dating experience whatsoever.
Sometimes I think my lack of experience was what would have drawn me to a guy like Len. He was only looking for a victim, and I was looking for love. Maybe if I would have dated someone in high school, I would have possibly read the red flags flashing so vivid right. But I was naive and Len took advantage of the fact.
I shifted around in my sleep pulling the quilt closer to my body and completely unaware of my current position in the car seat. A few seconds later, I felt a little hand pulling my cheeks and tickling me which ended up with me groaning. And the next sound I heard was a loud yell in my sleepy ears.
I jerked in response as my eyes opened on its own accord. There sat the culprits who were looking at me smugly. I gave them a dirty scowl and shoved Flynn's hand away when he was about to tickle me.
"You guys are so cruel. I was sleeping." I mumbled as I rubbed my eyes wanting to clear the sleep away. My hair was definitely a bird's nest.
"We're in New York, Debs." Flynn was playing his fingers on the steering to the beat on the radio.
"Don't call me that. And we are already here?!!"
"Yes!! We are in New York!! We are on a holiday!!" Genie was clapping her hands in excitement and was looking at us inn the way the kids look at their parents. I gulped nervously as I had a gut vfeeling that everything was going to go down hill.
Large Skyscrapers and yellow taxi cabs lined my vision. The streets as usual were buzzing with the morning rush. Everybody was off ready for work. Men clad in their office suits and women in their professional pencil cut skirts crossed the roads with a Starbucks expresso in their hands. I felt a familiar rush of feelings fill me as I gazed out at the big city which had provided me home for four years.
I smiled and turned my attention to my purse. I rummaged through the purse and found my moisturizer which I then rubbed on my dry and dull skin. I applied a lip balm on my chapped lips. With a comb in one hand, I managed to pull my tangled hair up into a messy bun. I patted my clothes wanting the creases to flatten under my touch.
I made myself appear less hobo-ish. And decent.
Throughout my time grooming myself, I had forgotten about the presence of other creatures in the car. Flynn and Genie was giving me the stares. But their stares contrasted against each other.
